the koi pictured is goshiki....( or as my mate Mat from nisei would say ..."gosh-key" )

One year with Waddy we were at a breeder that it became quite apparent
about the differences in pronunciation between english speaking countries....
the name of the place was spelled tanaka...

The americans pronounced it Tan-a-Kaa

the brits Ta-nock-kaa

he hid his stealth tosai in the drainage pipes between display ponds

anyway the give away on the pictured fish to it's true identity is the black in the pecs ( while you don't hear a lot of folks bragging up joe at blackwater,
I've seen some of his koi that were remarkable )

So how do the Japanese pronounce it?

Brutuscz; Blackwater mixes a lot of things to get eye-catching one-of-a-kind koi, as well as the established varieties. The interesting thing about Goshiki/Ochiba "blending", is that Soragoi was used as oyagoi in an effort to enlargen Goshiki in the 1960s.

That is interestng. The confusing thing for me was the netting in the hi. I have access to a lot of blackwater koi...one of their top dealers is in Connecticut..and is a friend of mine. The do put out some different fish for sure. I find that they do some varieties very well...and some..not as good. Since I have been dealing with them for several years now, I know what to expect from each variety.

Dick: I think it would be interesting to see data on where the best exported Japanese koi go. I'd guess that Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong & Taiwan top the list for the number of very expensive individual koi imported, while the U.S. may get a high volume of more "moderate" priced koi. I think the U.K. would be in-between. I don't know where South Africa would fall. Based on Nichirin photo displays, Taiwan and Malaysia seem to top even some Japanese shows in the number of impressive individual specimens. Your thoughts??

Mike, probably a pretty good quess. If we focus on nichirin alone and the coverage they give to shows it may be a good barometer of where the best koi are going.

Often we don't hear about the interest europe has ( excluding the UK ) in koi.
Our own B.scott as well as hencry C who judged there recently might put us wise to this over looked market. Because europe, by nation, is relatively close to each other, many top notch koi are coming into germany and being distributed thru out.

I wonder if exchange rate of currency might have something to do with it--someone working with, say, the South African Rand would be at a disadvantage to buy high end fish compared to someone with British Pounds Sterling...

...just a thought.

Jim Not sure, but good question. I think part of the problem is with each lanquage our culture teaches us to hear certain distininctions in language
and mant times we don't pick up the subtlties of others ...
The go-shee key of the americans as opposed to the gosh keys of the brits
is another good example...I think the japanese pronunciation is somewhere
in between.....the only claim to fame I have with language is my daughter
teaches spanish...LOL!

Angry what a revoltin development...

Had a nice chat with Mat today....that's the good news.....the bad news is i got to him too late. What used to be the best kept secret in koi breeding is now public knowledge....and his best ochiba Tosai have all been spoken for.

suddenly brutascz's posting of a goshiki takes on new significance....as some of Mat's top in this variety are available. So gang with apologies for me getting the cart before the horse for ochiba fans....looks like my study this year will be "gosh-key".....and as for me a lesson learned in checking first with the source...
good thing we have some of Mickie's ochiba to watch develop this year.
