Eye Candy: Tancho

Seems to me that there is always a fish posted on a website that captures my imagination. Kiefer's post of his young Tancho got me thinking of this one. I've admired her since she was posted. A nice maruten, but it's her pectorals that set off the package. Not many like this come along. Do you think the maruten has been cosmetically enhanced?

Hi Mike. You guys have told me before that tancho do not have a characteristic conformation all their own and it's just an optical illusion. My eyes are still playing tricks on me. Like most, this tancho seems to have a small tail tube.

I've noticed that too, Stev e. Hard for me to decide if it's really a narrow tail tube or a tubby belly on a skinny koi, but here is a study on a couple of different conformations on a kohaku lineage tancho and a sanke lineage tancho:

Classic spindle shape on this one, nice symmetry.

This is the nicest tail assembly I've seen on a tancho sanke, kind of an exception to the rule as most I've seen do indeed sport a small tail tube.

Surely genetics play a role in the propensity of tanchos in relation to narrow-tailed koi--perhaps two genes closely related and hard to split in order to put the pattern on a different conformation koi?

Hi Mike,
A good tancho kohaku is something to behold.....it was my daughter's favorite kind...she had one she named beni Boton...japanese for the red button...I had a koi kichi who had a dandy he called Poker Chip.....lots of things must be there to be a good one....better than average white, good pecs, great body shape...but it all comes down to the tancho spot and how well it's shaped by mother nature or helpful hands....some asrtists are better than others and I could never tell from a photo unless the work was really amateur...but once i had it pointed out to me the difference, I could spot it again .... But as in all things those that do this work get better with the more they ply their trade....

Let's take a closer look, Mike:

Are you thinking this might have been a shield shape rather than round? Does the kiwa appear to be surgically manipulated? I can't tell, but maybe the enlargement will help someone that can...

Since we are showing Tancho eye candy...here is my 10 inch ginrin. Bred by blackwater creek. Russ told me he didn't think the tancho would stay...but the tancho is much deeper than in the picture. Seems stable so far. Won best tancho last show with this one.

Marie..I'm no expert on the subject...but that looks like it may have been worked on. The edges look very sharp. I am interested in what Dick thinks?!?!

I think I agree with you. Looks a bit "snipped" around the edges to me too. Healed up nicely, but the edge looks as though a scalpel was pointed into the plate as the edges were scraped away...
