Thanks Russ, great post. Now that all is said and done, I feel a little more free to comment. It was a thread that I would have loved to have commented on but didn't want to influence one way or another...LOL...future koi and predicting what will happen, especially with showa is one of my fav topics.

As soon as i saw the first pic, I was interested from the body shape. After marie enhanced it it was apparent that the beni and the sumi was good quality. See the black
as a thin line under the dorsal? That's a strong indication that heavy black is there waiting to burst forth. In that particular position a heavy black saddles
the back and gives stability to the pattern. The pecs were already there, so all you had to do was wait out the sumi. The only other thing i would have done with that koi was to roll it over on it's back and look at the fins underneath...if they show black you have a much better chance of seeing more black to come. Clear? more of a dice throw....It was nice to See Brian
excited about the seminar...too bad i don't drink! LOL

The Nogyosai showa from Dainichi is one in the same as the GC from Shinkokai show (and Rinyukai). Took all three GCs this year!!

Maybe they can take the Quintiple Crown of:

All-Japan ZNA
Nogyosai
All-Japan Rinyukai
All-Japan Shinkokai
All-Japan Wakagoi

They have already taken 4 of the 5 for the 2006-2007 showing season...

The showa I posted would never be in a dealers 4 for $100 tank. Any good breeder can recognize that the quality would be worth keeping and they would grow it out. You will never find a Showa this quality for $25.00.

Russ, trust me there are some Showa like that in some dealers tank...

The problem with dealers are they dont keep tosai long enough to study the future potential of the fish. Does the hobbyist have to buy many tosai to find that diamond in the rough? Yes...But to the trained studied eye a hobbyist can cut that percentage of not so good buys in half.

But, could you sell that Showa to a hobbyist as tosai? No...Are those types of Showas culled alot? Yes...This I know of Showa, they are always 50/50...Even the best Showa sold for alot doesnt turnout the way anyone predicts. One has to know their water conditions to truly make the Bloodline work for them.
