I like #5 as my first choice as do many others but my wild card pic is #4. The body and head look better than the other fish but it goes against the grain for what people are told to look for in shiros. The leading edge of the pec is black and it almost looks like moto-aka in the one pec.
Keep us posted Jim because shiros are my favorite variety.
Off topic and maybe cause for a new topic, but do you ever notice at koi shows how few truly beautiful shiros there are compared to gosanke? For every 10 nice kohakus you are lucky to see 1 nice shiro. All the more reason too appreciate a good specimen.

I would also take number 5.

Well, I threw that out because on the learning side you can best determine what bloodlines you like or develop. Omosako has 2 types of bodies I have seen: The triangle(pointed nose) conformation and the soft rounded nose(like Sanke and Kohak)... Jim keep up the good work on the learning curve. It is always good to observe, experience, than to read something about it...

I was hoping somebody would say that. Check out the attached file to see why I picked one with no sumi on one pec.

I agree with Jim, the unbalanced motoguru is meaningless if there is sumi on the cheek (gill) plate on the same side. If it is on the cheek, it will develop on the pec.

Look closely at the gill plate on the picture of the shiro that Jim posted. There is sumi in every picture of it.

Amazing how many people picked #5. I agree- the body looks to be the best. Why did the one post think it was a male? One problem for me with Omasako is the head whites. They either stay cream or take forever to go white.

I choose # 5 also as I have seen way too much sumi be baby sumi and fade away. This one has potential to rise.
Plus taking a whippin on Russell's showa thread

Interesting generalization, Russell. May be, but I'll still pass.

A Shiro with no motoguro on one pec won't be a big distraction to me...If the overall quality is far greater than the one motoguro then there wont be a big issue. We can only wait to see how these Shiro develop.

For your experiment I think #1 will be the most interesting to see what happens, as the one fin seems to have no motoguro. I also think that this same koi has the makings of a very nice pattern. My eyes keep getting attracted to the larger koi in the bowl, but if I eliminate size I keep going back to #1 as my favorite.
