Explain the changes and also let us know if it grew any. So exactly how big is it now?

Like a dummy I didn't measure while I had the chance. I know it has grown some but remember they are inside in a 600 gallon qt (although it does get 2-3 25% water changes a week). They will not show any major growth until I get them outside. Attached are two more photos. I've circled where the sumi has thickened up and where it has come up. Take a good look at the areas circled and compare to the photo from 2 months ago. You can see a lot of sumi has come up on the head especially in the mouth area. Also the motoguro now extends to the tip of the pecs.

Jim,
I just skimmed back through the thread and didn't see the beginning size or age. Perhaps I missed it, but could you hazard a guess as to the current size and age? Also I have been keeping some Shiro Utsuri out of Showa inside under weak lighting all winter. While red and yellow colors fade noticably on different varities in the weak lighting, the Sumi stay strong or improves. I'm wondering if the Sumi will have tendency to fade in strong lighting, when Tosai are placed outside.

They are all tosai. That particular one is about 11". I've noticed the same with the reds but I haven't had any negative results on the sumi when moving them outside. I'll be keeping a close eye on it though when I finally do move them outside.

It will be interesting to see how or if they change once outdoors as far as sumi fading!1 I have one shiro (still young) that totally washes out once outdoors. Bring her inside over the winter and her sumi turns lacquar black. Go figure!!! Sure wish it would stablilize one day. She's got a really nice body and her white just sparkles. If she would only retain the sumi she's be one dinomite fish.....dang it!!! Maybe this summer will be different....one can only hope!!
