Steve, that looks much better! You are a brave soul .lol.in front of a teacher like that I would be so intimidated.

Gary, I like all the parts of the dragon analogy......never thought of looking at an eagle and seeing dragon,.but I do now!

How about a carp morphing into a dragon as it leaps from the water?

'Sanford and Son' Bonsai has a beautiful collection
Like a koi breeder, Mr. Liew is in a hither land between beautiful art and agriculture. When you look closely, agriculture is never pretty. It's a lot of utilitarian equipment cobbled together in order to create a beautiful product.

Here is an opportunity to bring this thread back around to koi. Mr. Liew's bonsai collection reminds me of some koi collections we see. You know the place. It has stunning koi in a setting that is reminiscent of a derelict brewery.

Some will say "it's all about the koi" and nothing else matters. For Mr. Liew, it's clearly all about the bonsai. The question is, does a beautiful koi or a beautiful bonsai look even better in beautiful surroundings? Or, is a beautiful koi or beautiful bonsai so captivating that everything else is irrelevant. ?

Interesting enough. Probably my first impression when I visit a koi pond or bonsai nursery is how intense the owner-artisans are involved. Some are handicapped by their sheer madness and focus to their specific goals to the point the over all picture gets a little chaotic looking or sometimes very clean and simple . I would say there is a correlation to different degrees between over all presentation and actual quality of collected or farmed pieces. In koi I have noticed allot of the high end collectors have very simple, vanilla and clean ponds with no bells and whistles. All energy is spent on water quality, filtration and show koi which is fine. They are doing what they enjoy.

I just attended the Tropical Koi Show near Boca Raton, FL, on the grounds of a Japanese Park. One section of the show had 6-8 bonsai vendors. What a fabulous place for a koi show with ponds and waterfalls and a Japanese museum to set off the show. I got a lot of bonsai pictures on my other camera. I wish I would have taken more with the digital camera.

and I attended the matsunosuke seminar in cali for Toshio sakai....larry Gill got me out to several nice bonsai collections and saw some really nice trees. One particulr cork bark black pine that was over 50 years was very impressive. I needed a kuro japanese flowering quince for my collection and larry was kind enough to send me home with a start from his.

Judging by the bark and what I can see.. Also by how the branches are growing only near the top. Looks like a cherry tree...
