Your Correct Gary! Bringing one back to the states can bring back hitchikers that can take out your entire collection of trees not to mention perhaps other bigger natural trees in area.

I know Nancy was kidding when she said that. Their just isnt a way to bring them back at all..

Damn hobbies !!

If you think koi are hard to take care of, by all means get some bonsai. You will be able to purchase some very nice trees because you will never be able to take a summer vacation again. Add a couple of high maintainance dogs that you won't leave in a kennel and you can never leave the house again. If it wasn't for bonsai I could have some really exceptional koi, and if it wasn't for koi I could have some really nice bonsai. So the dogs and I feed the fish and water the trees and wonder what a vacation would be like.

I have about a dozen very nice Bonsai and 2 dogs ( well one is a friggin monster, that belongs to hubby) and 2 ponds full of above average pond grade fish , and we still manage to travel to Japan twice a year, and we will be going to Spain this June. Koi and Bonsai and Dogs don't keep us from traveling, Thats what having grown children are for, to take care of everything while we enjoy life

Although I am not able to have bonsai in the dry Colorado air, I do enjoy/admire them.
While visiting England, I met Mark Cooper, one of our fellow koi hobbyists(and Koi-Bito member), and also a true master of bonsai. He shared with me some of the most elegant, gorgeous examples. I will never forget them.
The above site is one which he is a member. I think you will enjoy as I have.
Thanks, Mark.
Dear Jan,

I'm flattered that you remember the time we met at the McCanns' here in the UK. Thanks to you and Dick for your kind comments too. Our little study group's website that you mentioned is updated every Friday, so do drop by once in a while.
Bonsai is still a key part of the Japan experience for Ritta and I, and our annual trips to Japan in the fall are as much about Bonsai and Japanese friends as they are about Koi.
It will be repotting time here any week now !

Hi, Mark. Well, we could never forget "crazy Welsh folks" (as Tim Waddy called you). Honestly, your bonsai were tearing me away from the enjoyment of a great koi pond in McCann's conservatory, so I would never forget that impact. Both were fantastic. I also have kept your study group's website in my favorites and have visited regularly over the last 2+ years. Since I do not have the time and conditions to take care of my own, I enjoy bonsai in these other ways. It is truly an art. And you are truly a master of that art, I believe. Best wishes to you and Ritta. And happy repotting.

John, great pics, but at my age, I think that is a little to much work for me. I just want the bonsai tree, I dont want to go out and dig for it. I was trying to shame keokoi into giving me one of his, he also goes digging and collects some beautiful pieces.

Some of my favorite bonsai sites, you will see a common thread in each "yamadori"! Though I have never personally collected, I find it very interesting and once my kids are a bit older it will make a great weekend activity!
