beginner's bonsai

If you plant to keep some tropicals and or decidous than a greenhouse is not needed. Most evergreen trees will do fine in places where it snows. Problem is that you dont want all that snow to pile in branch pads as it can break the branches. Even a hail storm can cause some damage and set the tree back as it tries to ramify (sp?). Best thing to do in the snow is to put a bit of shelter but a bit of frost is not a bad thing as long as you do not let the roots freeze dry. In saying this White pine love a bit of frost..

Haha, the funny thing is, I have actually done that before...complete failture it was.
If you should get a chance, go hiking in the sierras, and you will see so many plants that look as if they are bonsai, well they are nature's bonsai and they are so beautiful and most definetly old.

Lildude, where did you collect and what species are you talking about in the sierras? and have you collected there before?

I have tried collecting before, and utterly failed.


But, you should try going to the sierras, they have a lot of natural bonsai. they are really beautiful and must be so old.
Species I most often see are pine that look like bonsai in rocks, they look so old.

What Kind of Pine? Also what kind of plant did you try to collect and fail? was it in the Sierras?
