Chris, split fin no problem, will heal very easily in warmer weather.
My concern is with the sumi, on the back of the fish the sumi comes up and wraps from the bottom, as a showa would. The front of the fish has Sanke sumi, and the pecks are also sanke. Now guess what the breeder says it is?

Nancy

I think you may have tipped your hand but the first time I looked at it, I had to look twice. Because this thread is about showa I assumed the pic was of a showa but my eye questioned my assumption. The sumi on the ozutsu screams showa but the rest of the fish says SANKE. So, that's my guess - a sanke!

Showa. The wrapping is Utsuri sumi, not Sanke. The pecs do not have stripes... tejima. The sumi in the pecs is radiating. It is motoguro. Who said Showa must have sumi on the head? (Was it the person who said Sanke can't? )

If I was benching it....

It'd go Showa. The pecs are poor for Sanke or Showa (but better Showa). I'd have to take a closer lopok in person for a final decision though.

The breeder is Ogata and the fish is 26", and he says it is a Sanke, I even asked him in person, while we were at the AJS. I even asked the person who picked the fish for Ken at Eastern, while they were in Japan, and Joe Co also says it is a Sanke.
Honestly when you see this fish in person, you have to take a second look, to decide if it is a Sanke or Showa, even Burt B. and myself said Showa first.

I agree, I still call it a showa/sanke. And it is a beautiful fish regardless.

Back to Midas' Showa for a moment

The larger picture satisfies the "must have all 3 colors" crowd with the white cheeks clearly visible now A very bold pattern to enjoy for a long time IMHO.
The only thing about this fish I'm not sure about is the tail tube looking thin trailing behind that bulky midsection. This one looks like it would be a great candidate for Dianichi's long winter fast to bring the body into balance. Anyone else have any thoughts on that?
