Bought a koi with a bad fin

i went to a petstore today and they had this 10 inch koi swimming around in a 15 gallon tank. right away i felt sorry for him...he wasnt all that pretty either. but anyway i looked closer and saw one of his fins was demented. it was kinda skary but cute because i thought of nemo from finding nemo... it wasnt fin rot it just look like his fin just curled up. i asked the guy what happen he said it was probably a defect when he was born..i gave him 20 dollars for it. question is was he really born like that or something happend to his fin. ill take pictures later.

Wow.twenty bucks? For a Koi that ain't all there?

When we buy fish from the stores....chances are they are not top of the line They are culls.so defects are normal in the koi. I am speaking of the koi
I see in my town, and others I have noticed. Large heads, raised spine, minus fins.crooked tails, patterns.lol.not really.

THey had a deal here.buy one get two free! Try and find one you wanted, let alone three But they sell like hotcakes,.one lady was there asking for all the pretty yellow ones

Yes, they can be born that way. A lot of times lack of proper nutrition as a tot can affect how their fins form.

I have seen quite a few.

I hope you QT'd the fish. Well learning experience, always buy the healthiest fish that is availble and even if that means from a pet shop.

koikiller...Don't buy the defective ones. They will ultimately disappoint you. Plus, you encourage these stores and breeders to make and sell garbage. If they had to hold that fish for some time, they would have discussed with their supplier about not passing off the defective ones on them. When they sell...there is no reason to complain to the supplier...and the supplier knows which retailer will accept their garbage fish!!!

Happened to a dealer friend of mine..received one too many defective koi. Contacted the supplier and said..send me one more..and I am NOT paying for it. Not only that, but I am going to box it up... and fedex it back to you..and deduct the shipping from what I owe you. No defective fish for the rest of the season!!!

On the other hand . . .

It is possible to come out on the good side of such a deal. I have several fish that I bought in Japan that are defective in some way--usually a bent fin. Because they weren't perfect, I got them for a vastly reduced price. I would never be able to afford these fish if they were perfect and they are, by far, the best fish in my pond. They just can't go to the shows

You felt sorry for the fish? I feel sorry for your fish if you haven't Qt'd this fish and added it into your existing pond or tank..

Please tell me you qt'd this fish from the petstore..

Please see posts on the "Kodama & Ebay" thread. A defective koi has no re-sale value. It is worth the $20 if you think it is and it gives you $20 of pleasure. ... Is a popcorn and softdrink worth the $10 you'll be charged at the movie theatre?

I can only think of maybe one or two persons on this 2,400+ member board who would have taken a not so pretty, deformed petstore koi if it had been free.
