Thumbs up

Wonderful job, CarolinaGirl! That's a beautiful DIY pond system to be proud of! I just love these kinds of threads, where a new koi kichi does serious homework and creates a perfect habitat for their fish.

Well done!

Now...will you show us your fish next? Purdy please? Would love to see

Marie

Here's the liner going in. It was really easy to get it nice and smooth. The drains were a breeze too. I wish I had spent the money on aerated drains, but at the time I did not realize WHY the air was on the domes. I thought it was just for aeration. I am going to retrofit the domes with air diffusers (supplied by weighted air lines) this summer. Anyway...after the liner was in, I put 1" thick solid blocks on top of the wall, sandwiching the liner in between. This would give me a strong, firm base for the large rocks. The rocks were all hand-gathered about 30 miles away and trucked home one pickup truck load at a time. I got 4 strong teenage boys to help set the rocks on top of the wall. Then the fill dirt came in and the yard was leveled.

Thanks Marie. It's not really the *perfect* habitat though. It's close, but there are things I wish I had done differently. Some are correctible, some are not. But all in all, I am really happy with the outcome.

I'll be glad to show you my fish. The pics are on my computer at home though. I'll post them this evening. Here's a few more construction pics. The green filter tanks have been re-worked since this picture was taken.

The last picture was taken this summer. The shade sails are permanently mounted and the koi are much happier. The impatiens are all planted bare-root in the spaces between the rocks. No plants are actually in the pond.

Here's a couple of shots of the filter re-worked. The first barrel is a static K1 filter, and the second is a moving bed. The moving bed can be bypassed if it needs to be for PP treatments or anything that might harm the bio-bacteria. I also made a static K1 filter for the inside of the Nexus (poor man's EAzy). Eliminating filter pads (and that horrible foam block that comes with the nexus) was the best! I hated cleaning them. Cleaning the static K1 filters is a breeze.

Awesome! Big DIYer here with similar delusions of grandeur (mud ponds and herbal gardens and eventually a DIY yurt), so I can truly appreciate what Cindy's done. *nodnodnodnod*

Keep those pics coming, Cindy!
