We just have poor quality photos; you have the fish, right?

1. It's a Texas Tancho (the red extends off the head and onto the neck/shoulder area). Not good for show.
2. Quality? Can't tell. Can't even tell whether the tancho will be there next year. So many tanchos turn out to be shiro muji after 1 or 2 years.

You probably heard that from some one who was trying to sell a chuppa with tobi hi.

sorry about the poor grade photos. I did my best since it was a smaller koi. I wish I had a better camera.

The small red scales you can treat it in different ways. Since the fish is still young you can remove the scales, the other thing is if the red is light enough and on top of the scale you can remove it with lemon juice(refer to latest issue of KOIUSA). Other than that the skin(white) quality looks consistant enough to condition later to white.
The article is showing how to use lemon juice only on the gill plates not scales. It will not work on scales so be careful.

Fwiw . . .

Lemon juice can also be used for tobi hi on the head.

Here's another time when I would try to give the fish as much remedy of conditions, remedy from the pet store conditions, as possible and wait for the fish to pull itself through. If we let these fish "not die" they'll grow. If we give them our best efforts at water keeping they will improve. If not, chuck em.

If showing and winning is your goal...stay out of the pet store.

I like your fish.

I'm total agreement with you Mickey. Your odds are not good if you are shopping the pet store. Find a good dealer that you can trust. Quite frankly you might want to check any of this websites sponsers. They will steer you in the right direction.

if you have a friendly dentist you could use eugenol to knock your koi out with, it's a brand name for oil of cloves. Good advice about waiting, you might want to see if the color is only on the outside of the scale instead on underneath...you can always use a fingernail....so no color food heh? What are you feeding then, Hikari wheatgerm?

Ethan, If you do decided to do some plastic surgery on your koi and scrape some beni or pluck a few scales. The best time to do it is later in the spring to summer. This will help the koi recover faster since the water will be warmer. Also so you wont further stress the koi by trying to catch them in the winter. I am not sure where you are located but thought I should say something before the attempt.

If in Hawaii or some place tropical I am sure you wont have a problem..
