Okay now, Richard You know you're out there playing with them when no one is looking...

Really Larry...you gotta try the lip gloss thing. How else do you think that big ogon let Bob Winkler kiss it?

You didn't hear that from me....

I'm afraid I'll have to take your word for it... If I still lived in California I could do it and nobody would notice ... around here I might stand out... just a little

A little comment I wanted to direct to you in particular. In the closeup photo's Marie took the intense fukurin level in the scales REALLY screamed These babes were looking mighty fine in the first place, but those shots tell the tale on a whole new level. You might want to consider adding some of those type shots to your ebay pix... could add a few $$$ to the bidding wars (much to the chagrin of those who like to buy cheap )
I love a good close up too. However, I don't know if I posted such detailed shots the reason would be understood on the bay or not. My sense though is that people recognize quality when they see it, even if they don't know why. That's why I put an emphasis on the photographs. Marie's picture highlights what we are about. We are working towards world class fish. It's a work in progress.

After seeing the close-up of Marie's fish, I think your goal is attainable and getting closer day by day. Keep up the good work!

The Wednesday following the arrival of the Tigerlily, the little pearl GR fishie arrived after having suffered Mr. Toad's Wild Ride down my road, the shipping box bouncing around the UPS truck like a hackey-sack (thanks Larry for the perfect descriptive ). Despite such a rough ride, the little pearl and its travel buddy (a lovely surprise addition by you-know-who) escaped mortal damage, with only a few scales, a shoulder scuff and a slightly bent dorsal spine from the ordeal.

This time the fish arrived in Elbagin enriched water, and though the travel was rough, neither fish had a bit of stress flushing--no red streaks in fins or other evidence of inflammation. Amazing.

Since the Monday before arrival, I've been incredibly busy making one or two 70 mile round trip commutes to Redding daily, hence the lateness of this posting. I've taken literally hundreds of pics to try and capture the neon luminosity of the little pearl, but none of the pics do this fish justice--I've tried every kind of lighting imaginable, but just can't capture what I see with my own eyes. Here are some attempts to do so:

With flash--

Without flash--

I find it interesting that the Tigerlily has similar highlights in the right light:

Gin or no gin, that is the question.

It could just as well be called extreme lustre bubbles....

Marie

Ginrin vs. Fukurin...

Your new babies scales have a different quality to them (even though they are hard to communicate in a photograph) compared to Tigerlily. The new baby has scales that appear to reflect light brightly like a light bulb turned on. Tigerlily has scales with a soft luminescence from deep within. More of a warm glow (fukurin)

The new baby is like...is like......Las Vegas lights. Either the scales illuminate or the nibs at the top of each scale illuminates in person--when one is lit up, the other is turned off. I am wondering though, if the Tigerlily started out as BRIGHT when she was that size. And since this is one more generation forward in Richard's breeding program, I am wondering if superb lustre has been taken to yet another level and the best is yet to come as the fish matures. I have a hard time imagining beni or shiroji any more brilliant without glowing in the dark...

Now that I have a living example of what fukurin is (here all the time I thought it was the glow of skin between scales, not the luminescence tracing the following edge of the scale), can that nice deep dark dot of beni at the root of each scale be called hoshi? Is that what that is? OR is there another name for that and what is the difference?

I know, I know--questions questions. But this is a learn by the seat of your pants thing for me and I've some great subjects to learn from with the help of my Koi-Bito family. Oh how I wish you could see these fish in person with me...

Thanks for the morning lesson, Larry

Marie

Smile

Here's an update pic, a side by side study of nisai and tosai, and the closest I can get to a top shot until the spring storms are past and they're in their own pond.
