Now that man can find a diamond in a pile of $hit, I have seen Chai find these little fish over at Andy's and Ken's that most of us would not look twice at. I have seen these koi entered in shows and get some very nice awards. Sometimes winning all the major awards is not as fulfilling as picking out that diamond in that $18 tank.

Yes Joe, she was 28" before she committed suicide last year. She jumped out of Chai's pond and hit the deck head first..

Actually, it depends personal preferences. if you enjoy watching your fish grows, then 4 fish for 100 will give you much more pleasure of watching the changes as they grow. you will learn more in the process too. imoh, it's a win-win situation.

I'm still a newbie in the hobby (3yrs.) and normally buy those cheap 4 for $100 tosai. Your story gives me hope that one will turn out okay. Of course my eye for picking tosai is crap and I have to buy koi from pictures, so it would just be dumb luck if one did. Even with that the 4 for $100 koi I get from cali are worlds better than what’s available to me locally.

yep! Chai's vision is incredible. some of us spent days/weeks/months and didn't spot any good fish out of the holding tanks at local shops. it only take Chai a few hours to pick out the best fish. he has the trained eyes for sure.
