I'd bet yours is kindai. I don't see any black reticulation at all in the beni....I do see some light grey in the white.

It does look like the new style Goshiki. It is very, very nice. It will be nice to see it in a year. Congratulations.

Very nice.

Several years ago I acquired some Goshiki tosai bred by Suda. After the first season in my pond, the white ground had become light gray. I kept a female for another season. The light gray became mottled and unattractive to my eye...almost like purplish splotches. She went to a new home. A year later, the splotches were gone and the gray was gone. The white was back! Now in her 6th year, she is a lovely kohaku-like fish, but light gray reticulation is now coming out on white scales. My point: be patient and let him develop over time. If he goes through an unattractive phase, wait and see if its just a "teenage" period.

Good point to observe. I have some Goshikis that have maybe one or two dark spots and it tends to worry people. They are Kuro Goshikis and in several years you won't be able to see the dark spots.

Thanks for the advise. I will give this fish plenty of time to develop. He is just so attractive now and I know he will be even more lovely in a few years if I am patient.

Mike: Good advice and observation. These fish can change so drastically that you have to be patient and not give up on them. It took me a few years to get wise to this event in showa, and goshiki is no different. I'm excited to see what mat will pull for me for our testing...hopefully something as nice as yours Cindy...

I hope he pulls something nice for your trials too Dick. The nice thing about this fish is his pattern is so attractive to me that no matter what the rest of him does for the next few years, I will still enjoy looking at him. My water is very soft so I except him to develop slowly. I have a showa that I have been trying to like for the last two years. So far.....I REALLY don't like him. But I am going to give him another year to do something. I have a feeling I will never be happy with the showa though. I didn't like him from the beginning....he was a lottery draw in a grow-out contest.

The gpod thing about your goshiki is you got to pick em, I usually was never satisfied with grow out fish assigned by number. I remember a few years back when we got shiro utsuri's from omosako.....we drew for picking number
and then most of the club asked me to pick for them LOL, that was fun. I got my check back because i was not drawn, so i got to participate in a way that was just as much fun. one of the koi grew up to take RGC and the following year GC. No one knows mat's koi like mat, so I'm excited to see what he picks out. I know he spawned 2 couples last spring....

we are doing a growout right now with Brady's fish....but we got to pick them ourselves from a certain group that contained different varieties. It's more a contest of one's ability to select tosai I supposes. It's much more fun than the lottery assignments. I was in on two of those and didn't like either fish. The kohaku was culled after one year and the showa will be too unless he starts doing something. For this neweat growout, I selected a showa and a shiro. I am very happy with both of them so far.
