Wink parameters

knowing what KOI need was most important for the parameters. This seems like a 'simple' subject, but so many factors can change the efficiency of a system's ability to function as it must to support these 'immunity challenged' fish that we love, that this subject becomes very complicated.

This is not in the least discuraging, but it is complex!

(Lord..please forgive my gazillion spelling error and let me express myself when I'm excited and a li'l tired!!)

so, after the Friday lecture

we were happy to get together for an evening of 'shmoozing', having fun, and telling stories...

This lecture would not have been possible without the hard work of many people, two of whom were....
vicky vaughn
and
karl forss(sp)

ouch it hurts

to use my brain when I'm tired, over-stimulated, and happy to be doing what you love!!

So...Saturday started with meeting in the lobby of the Gerorgia Center to go the study lab area where lectures filled the morning hours and lab work / hands on work filled the afternoon.

we biopsied the fish

including the gills.

my lab partner was Lee from 'the koi farm' from washingtonville, ny.

we were not the least bit squeamish.

Got to see a lot...

Karl Forss went to W**mart and picked up a bunch of sick, infested fish that we got to biopsy (scrape) and I got to see some parasites 'live' that I had seen in movies. Good times!!!!

what i wanted

my biggest goal was to learn how to draw blood from koi for testing. I practiced and was able to draw blood twice and found that there is a lot of technique involved in the feel of where to place the syringe, move it, and draw the blood. We used live specimens, unfortunately it is the only way to get the amount of blood necessary (1/2 cc) for proper testing for KHV serology. (sounds like i know what i'm saying, huh???)

the day flew by

it was amazing. Before I knew it, it was 5pm and time for the 'round table' discussion for any questions we had. It was planned for 1/2 an hour, but we were lucky to have instructors that were enthusiastic about giving us their opinions and specific knowledge on many subject, and we finally stopped at 7pm to have an amazing dinner of... (du,du,du,dooo...slow cooked whole pig, cuban style, by some mojo method by a guy from cuba named juan (jst kidding!! about juan). I have heard for the last 25 years from my gorgeous husband about how incredible a whole pig, slow cooked, can be...mmmmmm I wish he was here.... what a great dinner, and of course, we kept talking koi.

I mean, what are the chances that you will get this many koi nerds (that you don't already know) in a room to eat pig and talk koi!!!

I'm not as good as my husband as posting events, and I have a whole new appreciation of how hard it is to do when you are tired!!
xoxo
