Bekko patterns

I've heard conflicting comments about bekkos. One is that the pattern should extend to the head, the other that it shouldn't. I was under the impression that it shouldn't. My only "bekko" is a white and black one, however, I think that the spots are too speckly rather than spotty. Is there an issue with whether the spots are larger or smaller? This butterfly looked almost exactly like the koi in my avatar the spring we got them....it was hard to tell the difference. By the following spring when it reached 12 inches and went through a winter, almost all the hi was gone, and the bright white came out. What attributes would make it a bad example of a bekko? From what I understand, SHiro Utsuris have large stripes of black, correct?

Fish is now 22 inches. Can someone give me a good example of a white and black bekko?

Good Bekko patterns basically come 2 ways. Pebble "stepping stones" nicely placed down the back, or dorsal wrapping patterns similar to what you see on my avatar. What you have is the most common type, which is a messy random pattern of splotches and speckles. Well patterned bekko's are hard to come by as they aren't that heavily produced. Just not popular enough to get a lot of attention from breeders, but I like a nice one anyway. BTW, mine is not a perfect bekko pattern by any means.
High quality anything on a longfin is especially hard to find. They are a novelty fish so high quality breeding stock just isn't used to produce them. (That comment will piss someone off I'm sure )

My last trip to Japan someone wanted a bekko. I can say that good bekko is hard to find. I found that very amusing.

Then we talked about what Jim has mentioned about find a godo sanke and take away the HI plates and then you have good bekko.

So if finding a good sanke and take away the Hi plates makes good bekko. Then does that mean sanke is a tategoi for bekko????? LOL

This is my doitsu gin shiro bekko. It was about 5 inches here, but is about 9-10 inches now. I really like this variety...the sumi is like ink and the shiro is like snow. It really catches your eye in the pond. I need some updated photos when it gets warm...it's developing well so far. Breeder was blackwater creek.

Two years ago, I was benching the Spokane show with the owner standing by my side. A very nice bekko came up and I commented about what kind of
sanke it was before it lost it's color. The owner was absolutely dumbfounded that I would know how he came by it.....BUT

the truth of thr matter is that bekkos are not bred, but arrive into this world as a result of sanke breeding. ( similar to getting shiro utsuri from a showa breeding ) Some of the best one's I ever seen were tancho sanke that got shipped and stressed as Tosai, enough so as to make the tancho spot go away within the first 2 weeks upon arrival.

As stated a good bekko's pattern is a stepping stone one that keeps off the head, and steps down toward the tail in a random but pleasing pattern. Hopefully the one in the shoulder is a little bigger than the rest.

Rich Street, A koi kichi from Gig harbor washington, had an all japan show winner a few years back that was really nice.

There is something really nice , shiek if you will ; about a good black and white koi....

No..I don't mean ginrin. This fish has no scales. I mean gin...metallic shiny. This is what they sell them as on JKO. Think more along the lines of a doitsu metallic sanke...and that is the type of shine it has.
