Red face PSKoi has Gas!

Sorry, I just could not resist. It is the truth though, just not the kind of gas you might have been thinking of.
We have always used electricity at the store to heat Koi as needed, but now we have gas. I just finished hooking up a `185,000 BTU heater to one of the tanks and it works. The reason I say that is that it is the first conversion of a natural gas to propane gas that I have done. There were quite a few parts, including electrical parts, that I had to change and I was afraid that, with my luck, it would not work. It does.
It is done just in time for my shipment on the 14th.

Mike
It wasn't my ability I was doubting, it was the ability of the heater.

Russ, a few years ago I installed the same brand heater on our pond system. After about 14 months of operation the heat exchanger portion of the heater gave it up. After several discussions with the manufacturer they (the manufacturer) determined the heater was not designed for pond water (something about the make-up of pond water). Anyway, after you mentioned gas heater my thoughts of what I went through came back to me. I wonder if the newer heaters are now able to handle pond water?

I have had this heater running on my pond at home for four years, no problems.

There may have been some specifics about the mineral content of your pond water that caused the problem. The wrong combination of CO2, O2, and Iron in water can produce acids that rapidly attack unprotected metals. That being said, the addition of a secondary anode to improve cathodic protection to the coil should easily solve the problem.
