What is the age of your Yamabuki now MikeM? Her body gained a lot..she has a nice soft colour I like..

You surely must buy a very light one, we also purchassed a light one last year, the colour is slighty coming up. We found it very difficult to purchase a good light one, you see a lot of yamabuki in Holland with hard yellow/orange colour..I hope she stays very light in the future.

Good luck bringing her to a meter in length

gr,
Ingrid

This may be my new favorite fish, replacing Merle's sanke. Stopped dead when I saw her, trying to figure out what was going on, where did the huge fish come from and why did it look so different. The head is BIG. Love it Mike. Named?

I think Yamabuki are a variety that can be purchased from a US breeder and pretty much match results from outside the US. I have one from Brady and she is awesome. She got a late start on her growth but she is continuing to grow in her later years. She has one scale she managed to "mess up" which is a real bummer on a single colored fish.

Fukarin: She is a little less than 3 years old. Would have been hatched in May/June 2005. ....Nice one you have! (And no tummy issue is showing.)

Mick: I'm glad you enjoyed her. The grand show fish deserve the attention they get, but there is a different sort of appreciation involved in the non-contenders.... makes shows fun on several levels. When I first brought her in, I became hopeful that a best Hikarimuji was possible by default simply because no other large ones were entered. Then the Hildebrands arrived with their beautifully finished size 5 Yamabuki. A gorgeous creature I thought deserving of higher recognition than best in variety, but I'm partial to such fish.

MikeP: Yes, Brady's Yamabuki are beautiful. He had some for sale at the Naples show last November. I was sorely tempted. If I had not been staying overnight with the in-laws, I don't think my will power would have held up.

Thank you MikeM, she is hatched in juli 2004 and she was last october 69 cm. Is a Yamabuki more sensitive tot developpe a tummy than an other variety?

Lots of luck with pampering her

Ingrid

Checked on the progress of the Yamabuki today. (I'm starting to think of her as 'Yamabukichi' because of this thread.) I had a hard time getting her to hold still. I measured at 30.5 inches, 31 inches and a bit over 31 inches. Take your choice! I settled on 31". (BTW, the lower lobe of the caudal fin is longer than the upper lobe, so the length is most if the lower lobe is used, but since it is more difficult to observe, measuring becomes a bit of guessing when a fish just won't hold still.)

You'll notice the difference in coloration of the scales compared to the skin between. The body looks good when viewed from above. The tummy issue is pronounced when viewed from the side. The round 'apple' head is now more definite. Yellow pigment is coming together very slowly. She may remain more cream-colored. We'll see. Despite the shortcomings, she is beautiful in the pond.
