Yamabukichi

My long awaited Yamabuki arrived from Quality Koi today. I wish I could take a worthy photo. But, I was rushed and she was full of fighting spirit... she just would not hold still. The sheen is so even and soft...can you talk about depth of the shine, like depth of Beni??

Here she is in a blue tub today, and in a JNorth photo taken when she came out of the mud in October. A 19+" nisai. Still very pale in color, with the yellow truly the near-cream shade of real butter... just how I think best for long term development. I've waited 2 years to have a Yamabuki again. I think the wait was worth her.

Yes, you can talk about the depth of the shine like the depth of beni. It is what you look for with a single color fish like the Yamabuki. In fact, it is the fukurin that develops the sheen that is most important.

Mike, you have a very nice Yamabuki. I will agree with ytou that it was worth the wait.

Hi all...,

I'm new on this hobby. Is that yamabuki is the same with the starin we call Platinum?
Is there any page on the web in which I can learn more about koi strains?

Thanks!

Platinum Ogon and Yamabuki Ogon are from the same family (hikari muji) but not the same color. Platinums should be brilliant white while Yamabuki are yellow. This one is an outstanding example of one just beginning to reach its prime as the pale yellow slowly emerges and matures.
A pretty decent pictoral resource for educatinal purposes is found here;
http://www.koiid.com/cd/pg2.htm
For the most part it is pretty representative of decent examples of most varieties.

Thanks for the photo, Jim. It is really nice to have a good shot of her out of the mud for comparison. Memory can play games...at least my aging memory can.

Aquitori has raised the possibility she will become a Cream Ogon. I think the yellow pigment will continue to increase, but it may take a couple of years to know. The photos in the tub accurately show how the scales have a soft yellow tone, while the fukurin is just creamy enough not to be silver. Straight out of the mud she was more silvery. It will be fun to see how her pigment develops in the long Florida summer.

Keep us upto date on the development of your fish Mike. Kinda curious to see how much darker the yellow will come up.

Hi Mike,
If Mat raised your koi what were the parent koi? Were they both Yamabuki Ogon? It is surprising to me that the yellow pigmentation would develop so slowly. She certainly seems to be headed to jumbo size. It will be interesting to see how the color develops..
