Utsuri, goshiki...kumonryu is really catching up, they sell like crazy. I even saw a show in nichirin magazine where a kumonryu was grand champion.

Utsuri but then what

It appears that most think that Utsuri (shito) is next after the big three. Some even beleive are on the verge of saying the big four, but after that are there any fish out there that are even close to these? Does it matter?

#4 should be Goromo, #5 Shiro Utsuri, #6 Goshiki.

There has been talk about including Shiro Utsuri in "The Big Four" for about the last 10 years. Still hasn't happened yet!!!! Don't ask me why but I think it should be. As JR says, a really high class Shiro is still harder to find than a High Class Gosanke. Only a few breeders truly chase after improving the lineage to a truer form.

I would say the next three should be: #4 - Shiro Utsuri
#5 - Koromo
#6 - Goshiki

Although, # 5 and #6 could be interchanged at any time. I really like both of these varieties!

I thought that the big three had to remain a threesome because of the analogy to the three treasures - The Buddha, The Law and The Priesthood. Or, was that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Cultural confusion.

Also, four is an unlucky number - the death number.

Judging by show results let's say for the past 10 years over here,

At regional levels.

Shiro Utsuri was the undoubted 4th for a considerable time but is now being challenged by the Goshiki.

At the National level, Shiro's have not made any significan impact, whereas Goshiki (one in particular) has.

For an outside bet for the future I'm going for Kujaku.

with the tremendous advancement in Koromo and goshiki, I think they hold the best possibilities to move up. 4-5 years ago, Omosako really began working on building in bigger genetics to his shiro's so i think you'll find them more in a position to challenge. I'll always love asagi but don't believe they will ever move "up"....

Just for fun, I asked Mr. Sakai what he thought. His response was #4 Shiro Utsuri, #5 Goshiki and #6 Koromo.
