I suspect Sakai is not referring to the Goshiki we generally see, but to the most modern type that is a Kohaku with a moderate amount of blue-edged scales in the shiroji.... a Goshiki that is not a blue/gray base color, but white with blue highlights. He has spent two decades (?) re-inventing Goshiki to have the Beni and refinement of the best Kohaku. It is a rare creature still.

Recently JR was talking about the blurring of the lines between Goshiki and Koromo as newer refinements have taken place. As time passes and these refinements of Goshiki continue, will other lines become blurred as well or will they become more distinct? In other words, will Goshiki begin to resemble Kage Kindai Showa or Jimbei Sanke with reticulation, or will the transition move the resemblence further apart? I haven't seen examples of the newest and best with my own eyes so I don't have a good point of reference.

Larry, it is a subject for an independent thread, but... think of Goshiki as a classification rather than a variety. If you think that way, I bet you can picture at least 3 varieties in the class, and several individuals that would be classed as Goshiki, but are not quite like the main types (varieties). After you sort them in your mind, then research the origins of Goshiki and the history of varieties bred into "Goshiki". I think you will start to see Goshiki in an entirely different way.
