Matsunosuke Seminar Day 1

Day 1 of the 2007 Matsunosuke Seminar is over except for the drinking and the food, which should be going on right around now and I'm very sorry I have to miss it. I'm sure they're having a blast.

It was a day full of great discussions. Here are some of the topics we covered...
  • 2003 All Japan Koi Show
  • Judging koi in small, medium and large size classes
  • 2005 Matsunosuke harvest
  • Importance of nerikomi and fukurin
  • Good vs bad kiwa and sashi characteristics
  • Philosophies and insights as a breeder
  • ...and my personal favorite, the new Matsunosuke sanke sumi
Here are a few pictures for now, I'll try to post some more later tonight.

-Dan

Wish I was THERE

It sounds like several great discussion threads could follow the Seminar if all you good note takers were to conspire together...(hint hint)

Nerikomi is the evenness of the beni regardless of the color. It can be a light color beni or a dark color beni, but the important sign of quality is the evenness of color and the luster that is the sign of quality.

Fukurin is important because it is what supplies the quality of luster as the Koi grows and becomes larger. Furkurin will grow and cover the scales as the Koi ages until the scale is totally covered. If there is no luster to the Fukurin, then there is no quality to the color.

My interpretation is that nerikomi is the quality of the uniformity of color and sheen of the beni. You can have good nerikomi or bad nerikomi. Neri translates to kneading or mixing as one would mix dough for bread. Good nerikomi can be thought of as "well mixed" or uniform beni. It's actually more than that because the sheen also plays an important role in that it should look wet. Wet or soft is a useful description because it implies elasticity which is also critical component to quality beni. Wet or soft dough is elastic, while hard and dry dough crumbles.

Hi, Russell.
Japanese word of KIN ITU SEI is an exact meaning for evenness

Thank you!!! This is the great translation for Nerikomi.
I always have hard time to explain about Nerikomi to my Koi fellows due to my limited English ability...
Kiwa, thickness, evenness, tuya and Nerikomi are the magic words for the beni that we are looking for.... Thanks again

One of the things that came up in his teaching that i enjoyed was how he spoke about when a female koi begins to carry eggs the "glow" about her
really shows up in the beauty of the white. Reminded us all of when a woman is carrying a child how they seem to 'glow". just kinda struck a chord with me.
