The fish in this shipment were hand selected by Ken on his last trip to Japan. They came from several breeders and spanned a wide gamut of quality. Though there were probably no 'true' tategoi, there were pond, show, future and now fish -- something for everyone. Like a pyramid, though, the higher the quality the fewer the number of pieces and the higher the price.
Sakuma's shipment, for instance, included photos with margin notes breaking his tosai down into six quality classifications (which Ken passed around to us). It was fun to see the breeder rank his own stock and I'm sure it helped Ken price the pieces accordingly.
