Well like all koi she hit 6 inches when first starting but she'll be four this may when she goes out in the grow pond. You will be shocked at the first year's growth and i know very pleased. Your "baby" will be in the teens anyway lengthwise. You could see from Jim's photos ( thank-you Jim you have better photos of her than I ) that she is at a stage where her length is beginning to give way to an emphasis on depth, so will be fun to compare this fall when she comes out how deep she has become. I'm very much smitten by her quality. When she was younger people really disliked her head pattern, and thought her "very Busy" as a 6 step; but the bigger she gets, the more the quality begins to take away from the distraction. Just like what Toshio taught us at the seminar, by the time she is 5 or 6 the pattern will only be valued at 20% of the total score. It was love at first sight, so there's no rationalizing

Sorry, I don't know which one of Mat's breeder's was MOM......

This Photo , Are you saying she is 3.5 yrs. old ? How large was she at that point ?
What I'm getting at , is , Matt felt my Kohaku would go in the Mud at around 12 in. . Ball Park , What size could I see her at in Nov. ? I've seen some of the photo's on their Web-Site , Unreal Growth , but they don't say what size they are coming out ? Damn , Why did you have to start this Thread !!!

I think you've hit on why i started the thread, it's the anticipation of what will happen that makes it worth dreaming about.....If your koi hits the mud at 12 inches I would expect you koi to be 17-18 inches by fall. The first 3 years are the best for length, then they start to get deep. of course they continue to grow in length but not at anywhere near the first coupla years. It will be fun to hear your experiences this fall on how you survived the summer and what you felt when you first saw your 'baby" for the first time. It's what this hobby is all about.....

I purchased two sisters , I do look forward to seeing the difference between the two after a summer of growth . I have a feeling the one I brought home will be a shrimp compared to the one left in New Jersey .

The Before Photo : The one to Your right is going in the Mud .

Not Yet !!! I will leave the one Kohaku as long as Matt feels she will benefit from the stay . That could make the Koi expensive !

that was tactfully expressed "6".....I do think you will be delighted with your choice to put in the pond and the cost of getting that fish up into size.

I should welcome koidealer to our board......Nisei koi farm wholesales product out to dealers in case your interested....talk to tara or jen when you call.

Anytime you get a chance to put a fish in the mudpond, you need to take advantage of it. Even though there can be some risk that a fish doesn't turn out the way you want, it's worth taking. We had one come out a year ago and did not sleep well the night before in anticipation (she was our first). Now we have one going in the mud in the spring and we will see her come out in Nov. We believe Dick's fish that a pattern doesn't look good on a small fish but as she gets larger, she is growing into her pattern. Dick, she is already a beautiful fish. Headache, you won't believe what the fish will look like when you see it come out of the mud. We were shocked by the size of our first one out of the mud. One of the most fun parts of the mud pond pull is when they start draining the pond and you start seeing the backs emerge. Wishing everyone a good ponding and growing season.
