We're all here to learn, right? *nodnod*

KK and MK--direct sunlight with little to no shade can be hard on a koi. Results from over-exposure to direct sunlight is similar to the same effects on human skin. Some people develop more melanin and get sun tans, others (like myself) have delicate skin and will get sun burns if under direct sun for too long a time.

And that's just about the fish, not what it does for the organisms in the water. Sunlight feeds alot of things in water that it sterilizes on dry land...

...now back to the experts of this forum

Bacteria

koikiller stated:

i think you see them better in the sun....the sun also helps kill bacteria in ur pond
The first portion is definitely correct. But the second section, well......

Bacteria is typically not sunlight specific. If it was, how would it grow in covered or pressurized filters? Algae on the other hand needs sunlight. Thus most biofilters should be covered to prevent growth on the media that would restrict the biofilm growth.

As to shading a pond? Yes, it is typically a good idea so as to help limit algae growth. As to the amount of shade? that would be dependent on the geographical area one is in. Intensity and duration plays a key role in this area so sunnier, more southern areas would need a higher percentage of shade.

Well, you just violated that self same rule.

Think it's best you get back to listening and asking -- not telling -- 'cause you don't have the chops to be giving out bad advice on this board, dude.

In a related thought on light, It is often said while in Japan that the best time to buy a koi with beni is in the morning as opposed to the evening where the light makes beni look more attactive than what it actually is.......

I have seen pictures of koi in california during a particularly hot summer in a shallow pond in direct light that actually got "sun burned" and the white skin was redder than the beni......

also filter bacteria respond differently to exposure to light, some deal with it while others seek the depth of the filter and position themselves in the dark according.
Also upflow or down flow can make a difference as to what colonizes where.

Koikiller, I've killed more than my share of koi while learning. It's an unfortunate part of lessons learned. Even after you know better you can be running a hose with chlorinated water and get distracted with a phone call to discover you haven't done any of your koi's gills a favor. Hang in there, we're all still learning.....

what you said doesnt explain why sunlight doesnt kill bacteria. u said bacteria grows in covered or pressurized filters, maybe cuz theres no sunlight. and wouldnt it make sense that the sun would have something to do with naturally maintaining a pond or a lake? im not sayin u wont find bacteria in a pond that has sun exposure...im just saying theres bacteria that the sun kills..

YOU chose the name... not me
U.V. sterilizers are primarily used to kill microalgae. According to your "logic" microalgae will not grow in ponds with full sun because of the "sterilizing" benefit of U.V........ Hmmmmmmmm. Anybody else see a problem with that reasoning?
so what your saying is that because algae grows in ponds that the sun has no u.v. rays...befcause u.v. sterilizers are for killing microalgae rite? uv sterilizers are made for killing microorganisms.....if the sun has uv rays..why wouldnt they kill microorganisms in a pond..<---theres my logic...seriously though...think about it. i bet you wont bet any money that the sun doesnt kill bacteria in a pond.
