I'll stay out of the conflict that appears to be brewing here...

I'm not sure if this relates at all to this discussion at hand, but I have a few albino channel catfish in my Koi pond. They lived in an indoor aquarium for nearly a year and remained virtually white the entire time. As soon as they were added to my pond and exposed to direct sunlight for any length of time; however, they turned yellow. Blue channel catfish turn black when exposed to direct sunlight. I've never done any research, but I'd venture to say that exposure to direct sunlight does play a role in how a Koi "finishes."

And do you really think you could fool us into thinking you were a different person if you did that? Sometimes a person shows who he really is by his attitude. What ever happend to children being seen and not heard? Do you realize who you are speaking disrespectfully to on this board?? These are adults with experience and education. You are simply a child who thinks he knows more than he actually knows. Instead of sitting back and learning from the experienced koi hobbiests here that are willing to spend their time educating those of us who still have a lot to learn, you choose to argue with them. That is not only disrespectful, it is a waste of a wonderful opportunity. Such a shame. Please do yourself a favor. Close your mouth and open your ears and learn from these people.

Kid something that you have to realize is that there are a number of different kinds of UV rays,,,they are all not created equal and the sun provides one kind and the bulbs that we use are a different kind, UV-C

======================================

UV-C - Shortwave UV, that includes germicidal ultraviolet - 253.7nm wavelength - used for air, surface and water disinfection. Unintentional overexposure to UV-C causes skin redness and eye irritation, but does NOT cause skin cancer or cataracts.

UV-B - A small, but dangerous part of sunlight. Most solar UV-B is absorbed by the diminishing atmospheric ozone layer. Prolonged exposure could result in unhealthy effects on the skin and eyes.

UV-A - Long wave UV, also known as blacklight, responsible for skin tanning, generally not harmful, used in medicine to treat certain skin disorders.

Yes sunlight is good [best for koi] but there is always a problem. Birds can see there dinner easier and the algae if you do not have a good filtration set up. The water could also overheat the pond, so off and on sun is best.

That's funny, birds that eat our fish don't need much, if any sunlight, to find and eat them. Algae, also doesn't need much sunlight to overwhelm the pond. Waterfalls or surface agaition can control heat/watertemps for most climates........my pond gets direct sunlight all day long from May to Oct.........
