Hi Fellas,
Just a little update on Big Rose Sanke. Measured last weekend. She is now 67cm! Some more sumi has appeared. SHiroji is as good as ever. The Hi has stretched a bit though. She is a vociferous feeder. I am really pleased with this koi and would not hesitate to buy another Big Rose Sanke if presented the opportunity.

Hwong,

I'm quite expressed of your beautiful Sanke, she has not a lot of sumi, that's I like the most in a Sanke. I don't like the big patches of sumi on a Sanke you see nowadays..
Your Sanke reminds me a lot of a Sanke we bought 2 weeks ago. Altough your Sanke has a better hi patch on the head a think. Our Sanke is purchassed by my dealer as a Jumbo tosai from 40 cm on the auction of SFF last year. She was then 10 months old. She is a daughter from Akizakura and a male from Wakashoryu. She is now 61 cm and I hope she will reach this summer 65 cm. We don't have the temperatures you have in Holland. She is now in our pond at a water from 20 degreeC. We warm our pond.

We bought her for her nice musculear body, very very white shiroj and very little sumi spots. Maybe she gets in the future more, I hope not too much!!
You see a little picture from her in my avator, but that photo does not do her right. I will later posted some better photos from her.

A lot of luck with your very beautiful Sanke, she is really my type of Sanke

greets,
Fukarin

Sakai Isawa also has a line of pink beni. The fish, especially when two or three years of age, have very noticeable PINK red beni. Very delicate looking and very bright. JR

My guess would be aki sansai (just past 2years old). If I'm not mistaken, aki nisai is just past 1 year old.

Erns, It is slighty over 2 years old, so it is Aka Sansai like PPP said. My friends and I are planning on going to Sakai as well late October...maybe we will bump into each other fighthing over Big Rose Sanke! Although Hi, Sumi and shiroji is very good on better offsprings of Big Rose, the Sumi shape and placement is yet to be established.

JR, I have heard often of Sakai Isawa Pink Beni but have not seen it in person. Does the Hi on my Sanke qualify as Pink Hi? For the kind of quality that I would like to have, I dont think I am prepared to pay for a Sakai Isawa. I remembered meeting a group of ducth hobbyist at Nagaoka Station. They were showing us photos of their purchases from Isawa. Kois that will not impress those not in the know and said" Aka Sansai, very cheap only 3 Million Yen !"

Fukarin, I like Sankes that have delicate sumi markings too but it is not easy to find. So I had to take a bet of this Sanke with hardly any sumi. When She arrived, only the sumi at the tail remained! I was joking to my firends that I have a 2 jewels in this koi. From the front she is a beautiful Kohaku and from the back a beautiful Sanke But now, the Sumis are beginning to appear; small specks though..

Heywong
It is not how much you pay for a fish but how much you enjoy it . My favotite is the one on left . It is now 27in and soon will be 4 year old . Kevin had it for sale at the Orlando show when it was 13in long and he was asking $300 but no one bought it so I got all the leftovers from him at end of show .
The fish is a Mometoro and it is the most gracefull fish I have as well to me a beautiful sumi
Regards
Eugene

Good Morning Hwong,

The pink beni is actually pink in color. Very evident in the right light. It is actually kind of shocking when you see it for the first time.
Breeders like Sakai have indeed pushed the price from the sublime to the ridiculous. But you can find a bargin once in a while. Since fish have no real selling price other than what you can get someone to sell it for, supply and demand take over. It's really a kind of game.

I was once told by a breeder that the very best value ( not price, but value) was actually in the four year old koi. It is the age of least risk and because the fish is large, the breeder has no room for a great number of them in summer. So if the breeder has priced the fish at some outrageous level ( like say, Igarashi Kazuto does) and the inventory is getting out of hand, you can bargin on the four year old as you have both a motivated seller and a motivated buyer. You do need to be able to assess 'shelf life' or ' expiration date' of the fish in question though.
This may be off point but I think it needs to be said here- the retail buyer, especially the western retail buyer is told, or feels, it is tacky to bargin for a fish. The dealer bringing the consumer also discourages this as 'bad form and very dishonorable for the honorable Japanese'. The consumer needs to know that the dealer is NOT the advocate of the consumer. The dealer is a sales rep for the breeder. There is nothing wrong with making a resonable offer for a fish since a fish has no real value other than what a consumer is willing to pay for it. - JR
