The fish is a Mometoro and it is the most gracefull fish I have as well to me a beautiful sumi

The difference, Eugene, is that you paid USD300 while the Dutch paid 3mil yen. You wouldn't pay 3mil yen for a pond mutt that you like, would you? For 3mil yen, one would EXPECT a very good show quality fish. Btw, that's a really wonderful sanke, especially for USD300.

So if the breeder has priced the fish at some outrageous level ( like say, Igarashi Kazuto does) and the inventory is getting out of hand, you can bargin on the four year old as you have both a motivated seller and a motivated buyer. You do need to be able to assess 'shelf life' or ' expiration date' of the fish in question though.
This may be off point but I think it needs to be said here- the retail buyer, especially the western retail buyer is told, or feels, it is tacky to bargin for a fish. The dealer bringing the consumer also discourages this as 'bad form and very dishonorable for the honorable Japanese'. The consumer needs to know that the dealer is NOT the advocate of the consumer. The dealer is a sales rep for the breeder. There is nothing wrong with making a resonable offer for a fish since a fish has no real value other than what a consumer is willing to pay for it. - JR
JR,

We Asians are pretty adept at haggling and bargaining. Don't forget, Japanese are Asians too. They may open with a higher price, expecting you to bargain. If you don't, too bad for you and too good for him! Discounts of 25-40% from their opening offer price are not unusual. Perhaps that may be why kois cost so much more in the West than over here.

I'll give you partial credit on that one... BUT, if haggling is anticipated the starting price has a tendency to go UP! That way there is plenty of room to go down without taking a hit

Your point is well taken, but I side with PPP on this one. If you don't bargain with a breeder on a substantially priced fish, you'll be the fool and part with your money much sooner!!LOL

So may be an Auction is the way to go for me . Or I could rent a bicycle and arrive at the breeders but might not get any attention . In the long run I do think that if you have a knowlegeble dealer working and negotiating for you there would be much price diffrence .
Then best deal I got was when I asked Toshio to select for me worst was when I selected some better fish from photos especially one showa . Then surprise as 2 excellent showas were included with young fish .
I would think that a slacker time such as March where there has been few sales large heating bills with a substantial purchase might be a good time but to make a substantiol purchase you would have to be a dealer .
Then come the shipping problems unless you have a larger quantity . Myself I put a fair price and when a haggler has used up some of my time I increase the price and say sorry I made a mistake works for me every time and I usually get a little more than I asked .
Regards
Eugene

Eugene,

I'm not sure auctions will get you a better deal. I've been told that a leading breeder lost a substantial number of its frys last year because they were experimenting with some new kind of food. It was a really bad year for them. To compensate for this, they "jacked up" prices during their annual auctions, using plants to counter bid. We end up paying grossly inflated prices.

Big Rose Sanke- Sumi development

Took some pics of BiG Rose Sanke's sumi development. Looks like they are appearing out of nowhere. DOes this mean that when choosing a Big Rose sanke, one shud choose one with minimum sumi otherwise there will be too much? She is 69.5 cm and seems like she is going long before she goes wide.

The one thing one has to look for in selecting Sanke is the placement of the sumi and the quality of the sumi that is up. The one thing that really stands out on your Sanke is the conformation and the bone structure. Also I think the Sanke will finish off when it is done growing and that includes the sumi.
