Amikacin dosage

Anyone know the formula for dosing the average 6" koi with Amikacin? How many cc's and how many times? How long between injections? My outside koi appear to have come through the winter in pretty good shape, but I have a few problems with some that were kept warm all winter. Go figure.

The dosage for a 6" Koi is 0.1cc every other day for three injections.

There are at least 3 concentration Amikacin that I've known of: 50 mg/cc, 100 mg/cc and 125 mg/cc. The higher concentration are typically packed in small (2 cc) glass syrine.

It would be proper to specify dosage in gram or milligram of drug. Then volume is selected per concentration. MA. Le

Thanks Mynamy,
Maybe you can add a forth concentration to the list. It says 500mg/2ml on the bottle. I got this in Nogales,Mexico and it says Amikin on the box in large letters and Amikacina under it. It a carries Mead Johnson trademark. Is Amikin the same as Amikacin? If so what would the dosage be for a 6" koi?
Thanks,
Mitch

Hi Mitch,

I am sorry, the dose rate I gave you was for 50mg per ml. Since what you have is 500mg/2ml it would be 1/5 of what I told you.

No single correct answer

Water temperture is one of the most important factors to consider when giving cold blooded animals like koi an antibiotic injection. Metabolism doubles for every 10 degree centagade which is about 16F degrees. This means when antiboitics are injected they are metabolised and excreated from your koi much slower in colder water vs warmer water. Therefore depending on the type of antiboitic you are injecting you should be injecting less frequently in colder water (3-5 days) and more frequently(1-2) days in warmer water.

Also in general most dosages of AB I see suggested in U. S. literature are much higher compared with what is used by breeders in Japan. Dosage should be based on body weight instead of lenght. There are legal issues concerning the treatment of animals with controlled substances like antibiotics depending on which state you live in. I strongly reccomend you consult with a qualified fish vet or other reputable up to date resource to help you determine the best type, dose, and dosing regimine to use based on you individual circumstances.

Overdosing antiboitics can significantly and quicky damage your koi's kidneys and liver functions. Underdosing or stopping the AB treatment too soon can also result in lack of treatment success and also developing antibiotic resistance.

I think I got ya. I'm using a 1cc insulin syringe. It has 50 marks on it. The 10-20-30 etc are numbers marks with four marks in between. So each mark is 2 units since 100 units = 1cc. So I go to the first mark with the 500 mg/2ml bottle. Not much margin for error on the 500mg/2ml concentration.
Thanks,
Mitch
PS
I agree with everything Ray says.
