POND -vs- POND

I have a Sanke that doesn't seem to be putting on the size that the other's (bought at the same time) have . I have read that moving a koi to a different pond can sometime's "Jump Start" a koi for growth ? My pond has alot of surface area , but only about 42in. deep . Would moving the koi to another pond of around the same gallon's but much deeper have any benefit ?

Growth is determined by the genetics and if the koi was small it will likely stay small but 42 in is a little shallow to maintain good body shape

Indeed you can not make a fish more than genetics provide. But with high water quality, high DO, strong currents and good food....you give the koi the chance to be all it can be.

I would go for a deeper pond...and serious currents. The serious currents can be easily be created by cranking up air pumps on the BDs. I run a Airtech 80 on each BD. That really keeps the pond bottom clean, keeps up the DO, and provides great current for riverine carp. Remember carp are fish that came from serious river currents.

Didn't I just read JR say- "If you think you are not overstocked take out two fish."

I am one of those guys who believes in the illusion of pecking order. I know its not pecking order but the littlest fish will often stay the littlest fish and lag behind the others in a pond. Change the lineup and the smaller fish can benefit from more room and within days or weeks change their behavior, possibly shooting up in size.

This has been typed by a guy with a small Momo sanke. Don't trust a word of it.

You can not argue with anything said above. But, there is definitely a relationship between growth rate and stocking density (amount of space allotted each individual).

this is a bit off the subject but i had a pond recently with goldfish in it and there was a massive amount of weed in the pond.

when i harvested it i found there to be many thousands of smaller goldfish in the range of 4-15mm long compared to the majority of fish 5cm long.

this was unusual as id never get so many small ones otherwise if the weed had not been there.

two things sprang to mind.
1 the weed gave the small fish somewhere to hide and so this group didnt get predated upon as they would normally.

2 the weed gave the smaller slower growing or timid fish somewhere to hide and they didnt leave the weed home to venture over to the pond walls to feed and grow larger.

as for your fish a larger pond should mean it would grow faster.

oh sorry, i notice you say the other pond is about the same gallon capacity ... my thinking would be that the more surface area may mean for more natural food organisms, so it may depend more on the stocking rate of that new pond.

seeing as youve got others in there doing better, its likley behaviour and genetic which might be harder to improve upon. you may have to mother this fish to catch up while you could give the other fish that new condition and watch them stack on the size.
