She's doing fine! Thanks for asking.

She's still in Q, been at about 74-76*F for the last three weeks. I'm unsure about my next step, whether to scrape and scope, then add a buddy, or the other way around. I'm nervous about S&S since I've never done it before. I have a 'scope but haven't used it much except for to look at a few drops of pond water when I first got it about a year ago.
Not sure I'd recognise what I saw anyway. I know there are sites I can check to ID them, so I could maybe muddle through that.

Maybe someone can answer another question? Do I only SS the new fish, or both the new fish and the buddy? btw, I've never scraped my other fish, as I've never had any diseases or ulcers, and haven't seen any behaviors that indicate parasite, such as flashing, etc.
(Sorry for the thread hijack, Marie)

I like that song on the third video, but isn't it a bit depressing for the koi video? lol! Next video, pull back some so we can see the whole pond.

Hey, feel free to highjack away. I don't mind at all. It's an idle thread just dying to be taken away by Calgon!

FYI--Richard treats all of his fish for parasites right when they come out of the ponds. Though I quarantine out of habit, I've never found a bad icky on any of the koi I've gotten from him--and all of them extraordinarily healthy. I know all of us fear the dreaded KHV, but with no incoming new koi to the farm for the past 15 years, I'm thinking that Richard's stock is safer than most. Still doesn't hurt to QT, but no great need to worry much either. I'll be surprised if you find anything when you S&S.... *S*

Cool

Marie, must be nice to be able to sit around the pond....outside. It's been raining here for days...everything is soggy...with more to come. Oh well, That's why they call it the evergreen state, cause it's ever raining. I hate going in and sitting by the inside pool as my favorite asagi thinks I have a worm for her and when i don't she pouts. Worked with my satsuki azealas
that I use for bonsai. Am training some little starts into a root over rock
kind. It involves starting them in long narrow tubes filled with actual soil from japan ( kanuma) so that the only place the roots have to go is straight down. Then each year you begin removing the soil at the root line and twisting the tiny roots together so they grow together and get bigger faster.
After about 6 years they are then attached by raffia ( dried grass) to the appropriate rock with deep fissues in it and buried once again in soil so they attach to the rock. Then over the years they are uncovered again for display. This way for the next 10 years when it rains I'll have something to do! LOL...oh my

Yeah, I wasn't afraid of KHV as I've learned about Richard's bio security, tho' I didn't know about the paracite treatment, that's good to know.
Actually I'm more conserned about my fish affecting her. I haven't seen any problems, but like drinking the water in another country, they could just be used to their own bugs. I'd hate for them to make her sick!

I don't think I could handle continuous rain like that, Dick. Winter is always like "the waiting room of the world," as C S Lewis coined it, and it sounds like you're still waiting. *S*

I'll have to send your asagi some of the nightcrawlers that live beneath us here. They can get as thick as my thumb and 10-12" long, and it's a hoot watching them being slurped up like the finest of spaghetti. It looks like a game of tag football when one of the littler koi get one of the big worms and runs all around the pond trying to chew it down before the other koi catch up and attempt a swim by snatching of the bait wagging along beside its furtively gobbling mouth. *L*

Wish I had an indoor pond...perhaps one day the experimental one in the video will be greenhoused like I planned to do last year. It's getting some permanent upgrading this year. *nodnod* Like real plumbing and a bonafide certified pond liner after the shelves are dug out. The projects never end with koi kichi, do they? *S*

What an interesting technique to bonsai! I've always wanted to try something like that with the lovely Mimosa trees here. They are very prolific from seed and I always get a gazillion little Mimosa sprouts coming up in the spring, which if I didn't mow them down would be a foot or two tall by the end of the year and I'd have a forest instead of a yard. *L* Would Mimosa make good bonsai? They are so graceful and fragrant....

Marie

LOL Barb! You're as paranoid of those things as I am when it comes to my precious koi. You can put one of your koi in with that lovely sanke to see if anything detrimental occurs, but you're probably just as well off putting her in the pond and watching. If you're really worried, PP the pond or something before putting her in.

She's going to be just fine though, any way you do it. I almost killed my first koi from Richard the very first day I put her in the pond (jump out, kitty attack, facial lacerations and 50% of her scales licked off). She should have been found dead, but by gawd she hasn't lost a beat. The worst result is a shimi that developed over winter in the worst area of her kitty scaling--right on top of the shoulders. If that's the worst of it, the fish is indeed lucky to have survived that part of my learning curve.....
