For 2006 spawning, I counted TWENTY different kohaku pairings used by Sakai. The oyagoi names are - Yamato, M-Rose, Dancing Queen, Love Queen, Beauty Rose, Nozomi, Beauty Smile, R Kohaku, Ruby, Rose Symbol, New Symbol, Nemo, Love Symbol, Yokozuna, Dream Fujiko, Benibana Daioh, Benihanako, Tomahawk, Patriot and Botan II.

In the same year, Sakai had TWELVE different pairings for their sanke. The oyagoi names are - Zipangu, Flower Queen, Rainbow, Big Rose, Beauty IV, Shining Rose, Akizakura, Miss Japan, Wakashoryu, Wakashoryu II, Young Dragon, Hiryu and Koume.

Many of the sanke oyagoi were kohakus too, but paired with sanke males.

Got these from Sakai's parent koi brochure which Kentaro passed around earlier this year when he was in Malaysia.

I think we're comparing apples to oranges here. The Sakai we're talking about is Matsunosuke. He is Toshio Sakai of Isawa Nishikigoi Center, not the Sakai from Hiroshima. Sorry you got confused.

My apologies if I was mistaken there. The nisai showa mentioned by Erns at 6.5m yen must have misled me as there was indeed one sold via auction by Sakai of Hiroshima recently at that price. I'm not sure if Toshio sold any nisai showa for that price..

In my part of the world, we normally assume Sakai of Hiroshima when we hear the word Sakai. I know of Toshio Sakai and his work, but what actually is the name of his koi farm? Some writings suggest Isawa Koi Farm whilst some others suggest Yamamatsu Koi Farm (his brother's, I believe).

This link breeders lists many well-known breeders (out of over 1,000, I believe) in Japan. I think the Sakai listed there refers to Sakai of Hiroshima. There doesn't appear to be any listing for Toshio Sakai, although Yamamatsu is mentioned.

Again, pardon my ignorance..

Nice link, ppp.

The Sakai brothers whose father operated Yammatsu Koi Farm are not related to the Sakai Fish Farm family. Toshio Sakai, being the younger son, left the family business to found his own in Isawa. That there are 3 superb koi breeders with the family name of Sakai causes much confusion. No doubt, the Hiroshima Sakai dominates in show awards and in volume of production. The two go hand-in-hand. The Sakai brothers seem to find customers in Japan for a greater proportion of their fish than most breeders.

I think the reason for this is that Toshio focuses on breeding top quality fish in limited numbers for the discerning (and better heeled) serious hobbyist, rather than on volume. For such limited number of top notch fish, the Japanese market is sufficient to absorb their production. The sheer volume of fish being produced by Sakai of Hiroshima every year cannot possibly be offloaded in Japan alone, so they obviously have to concentrate considerable efforts on exports.

I've also been told that the Japanese market for koi has been shrinking somewhat over the last 10 years. The younger generation has not acquired the passion, apparently. Breeders have been concentrating on building up the hobby in export countries.

You're correct! Toshio Sakai's facility is in Isawa, and is know as Isawa Nishikigoi Center.. Toshiyuki Sakai is his older brother. He inherited the farm of his father, known as Yamamatsu Koi Farm. Their father developed the line name which they both are considered famous for - Matsunosuke. Usually, when you hear the name Sakai, it refers to SFF, Sakai Fish Farm of Hiroshima.
