Rate this Gin Rin Sanke

Got this one in December at 28cm(11"). Took a look at her today, she is 45cm(17") today of which I'm pretty proud. Breeder is Takeda. Still a Nissai. I included a pic of what she looked like at 28cm. Notice the change in sumi. My pond is good for sumi development but on this one it got less. I however like the 'new' look more. She had a bit of a 'pot bellie' when I got her but figured I'd give her a try anyway. Bellie is almost gone. Comments welcome. One of my show hopes.

Hi, You have done a VERY nice job at correcting this fish's conformation! Really excellent!
I think the sumi is the fish's best feature. And the condition of this fish's skin is excellent.
In South Africa you will go by ZNA rules so I think this fish will do well in ginrin A. If this fish is up against real matsunosuke gin, in the normal sanke class, it will likely loose. The reason is, yours is niigata gin and real ginrin. And this tends to make your beni look that light orange, which might influence the judges eyes?

The pattern is fine but what Japanese consider 'primitive' in evolutionary style. If you study the great kohaku and sanke of Japan you will notice that the pattern, variable as they may be, tend to all be evolved patterns. What I mean by this is the plates of beni form step patterns and balance all the way down the dosal region. Sanke can get away with longer patterns like inazuma and large moyo because of the stepping stone sumi that helps break it up. But in this case, your excellent sumi is a bit clustered so you loose that effect.

All and all, your koi is excellent and again, I'm impressed that you have gotten the very most out of this fish. The competition on the day will tell whether my concerns for the beni and long pattern will be a major issue or a minor one. Best of luck. JR

Thanks JasPR

Do you perhaps have a pic to show this other kind of Gin Rin you are talking about? Is there any chance that my Sankes benni might go more red as the fish matures?

Great looking fish a good bred fish will not have a pot bellie untill she starts to carry eggs then it is the time it will need to have a dormancy period as well as go into a mud pond so it may develop to full potential . At the Orlando show I learned that in a gin rin koi one of the most important is that it must be a perfect gin rin . It was a gin rin showa that took the best in variety .
Regards
Eugene

Erns, sorry to be late, I just noticed your response just now--

Matsunosuke gn is a strip of ginrin scales most typically along the sanke's side or peduncle. It is allowed to be ignored as a line trait and the fish is judged as 'normal scaled'. What I was suggesting with my comment is , if your fish is entered in sanke class and NOT Ginrin A, it will likely loose to matsunosuke gin as that gin is accepted easily in the sanke class.

Here is a sanke ( sorry for the quality of the picture) with a lot of matsunsuke gin- so it borders on being ginrinA. Still, this fish is good enough to compete in sanke proper as it has some wonderful elements--

This is magoi sanke, by the way

Thanks. I get it. Have some with that in my pond as well.
So magoi sanke, is it from Koi No Yohei or Sakai? As far as I know they are the only two to have had great success with magoi. Koi No Yohei however has nailed it with albino magoi. They are on my shopping list when I go to Japan in Oct. Can't afford Sakai...

Yep, one of Saki's. Here's another I liked that is 'ginrinny' but really Matsunoske gin ( old Niigata gin)

So how much do you guys pay for koi from Sakai? Lets say tosai to nissai, show grade. Our dealer was just there and his message was if you don't have $6000 to $10 000, don't bother? I find it very hard to believe. He had some good tosai going for 1.8mil Yen!! And a nice nissai showa for 6.5mil yen...that a nice house here in South Africa!!
