A new Ai Goromo . . .

your thoughts, please, on our new Ogata bred 20" male.

This koi is our birthday present to each other. We both turn 60 this year, so he was easy to name -- six-oh.

Ok...I really like this koi. Excellent shiro and pattern..very interesting. The only fault I see is the window of shiro around the shoulder. But truthfully..who cares? I would never get bored of seeing this koi. Enjoy!!!

Hi, first timer here and also new koi hobbyist. I am enjoying reading on this forum.

May I know what brand of make-up set on the eyes is he using..wow...water proof. Very Nice and balance pattern, strong Shiro. Without the window on the shoulder will be even better.

Nice looking male. The "window" appears to me to be simply the pattern, and not a weakness in the Hi plate. I've not figured out the Goromo group. The very best Ai Goromo IMO have the Asagi genes express themselves through picotee-type edging on the scales within the Hi plate. These are very rare. Typically the shading becomes smudged and covers the scale in a muddled sort of way. With Budo Goromo and Sumi Goromo, the dark pigment overwhelms and actually makes it easier, it seems to me, to find a good example of the type. With Ai Goromo, it is all about reaching a balance between the Hi and Sumi on individual scales... a terribly difficult thing genetically, and beyond my ability to try to predict the future. There is a special quality about Ai Goromo that I find appealing. A subtle spice for the pond, compared to say a Yamabuki. I expect this one will become "muddled" as time goes by (easy to say, since virtually all do!), but will retain the basic character that makes Ai Goromo worth having. BTW, it seems to me that the best examples I've seen in person are male. Perhaps the equivalent females are too quickly purchased in Japan/Taiwan?

Mike is right, it is NOT a window, it is just part of the pattern.

Don, since I have seen this Goromo in person, I will say that your pics are great but that fish is even whitier in person. I really like your new guy. I think you will have years of enjoyment out of this fish. My favorite thing about him is the eye's, they just tie in the word Ai Goromo.. Enjoy very very nice...

On a side note, Ogata won best in class at last years AJS with his wife Hiromi's Ai Goromo. It was featured on Nichirin's cover issue January 2007.

The window definitely appears to be in the pattern...not a weakness. According to Kokugyu 2...it is considered a fault. I, on the other hand, think this fish is awesome.
