Thank you very much. I appreciate the time you took to find those for me!

Sorry but true. Now if you want to understand why your koi has no show potential, you should check out this site:

http://www.japan-nishikigoi.org/show_young_e.html

On one page you can see the different show varieties and you can see how a koi's conformation changes with age/size.

9" equals about 23 centimeters, so pay particular attention to the conformation of the 18th, 23rd, & 28th Division winners as compared to your koi.

Best wishes,

Just trying to learn....sorry about the clutter again. I thought I saw that these pictures showed something that maybe the others did not, which is why I posted on this fish again. I will definitely look into those webpages and read up on those varieties and conformation changes.

Have any of you seen one like it before? Fish is currently around 9-10 inches. THis is the first decent picture I have had of it, as I just got a nice blue bowl. If the current pattern holds up till next year, I was thinking of possibly showing it in that class....

Thoughts? I would really appreciate them. I'm here to learn.

for me, that's a ginrin asagi koi. not a show type quality. but.... this koi can give highlights in your fish pond together with kuhakus and showas. once you mix them with the big 3's (kuhaku, showa, sanke), that's the time you will appreciate that koi. just let it grow into jumbo size koi and that's the time that you will appreciate its beauty.

Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it!
Here's another recent pic....12 inches long. IT is growing well.....

pectoral fins are a bit small, but I don't really care, the fish is very sharp looking in the pond...

phoenix . . .

Japanese terms like gin rin and asagi have specific meanings and this koi is neither; it's hikari (metallic).

If you don't have a koi book with a good glossary of terms, here's an URL that covers many of the basic ones:

just let it grow into a jumbo size. you'll see that the blue color will become more bluer. that koi may not be as spectacular as the big 3, but when u mix that koi with the big 3, thats the time you will appreciate the beauty and be glad that you keep a blue koi together with your kois in your pond.

btw, i named this koi a ginrin asagi, coz i see diamond like scales and the blue color scales that resembles asagi. for me, this koi may be a cross between asagi and ginrin or metallic koi. just my own opinion. :-)

ps. i like ur blue koi. ;-)

I hate to break it to you, but you and I don't get to name Koi anything just because we think it resembles something it is not. Benching Koi (that is what this thread is about) is not so subjective that an non-asagi can be classified as an asagi simply because it has some blueish scales. There are actual standards set by people who actually KNOW what they are talking about that any Koi must meet in order to be benched that way. So far as I know, there is no such thing as an Asagi with no discernible scale reticulation, no beni, and black motoguro in the pec fins. You can call it Fred if you want to, but it is simply an unusual blueish metallic Kawarigoi.
On the road to Jumbo, there are a lot of pot holes. This one fell into a deep one while still in the egg. That isn't an insult to the Koi. It just doesn't have the bones for it to even be a wish, much less a reality.
