Larry,

As this fish matures, do you see it as an interesting fish for a koi pond? I guess I want to know whether you would keep it for interest's sake or not?

You call it an "unusual blueish metallic Kawarigoi". Does the unusual make it worth keeping? Or is unusual your nice way of saying ugly?

just curious....

Not calling it ugly, just unusual... because it is. It is an atypical Kawarigoi, which is the official Japanese term for "unusual". It is as pretty as you think it is as it is your fish and your pond. It will add a splash of metallic blue to the pond, and might be a lot of fun to watch it grow. Just don't take it to a show. I have several somewhat "unusual" Koi, and a few that are downright ugly... They won't be going to any shows either

Gotcha man,
thanks!

what is a typical kawarigoi? Does it depend whether the kawaragoi, which are unusual in nature, become more usual and dependable in their breeding and bloodlines?

For instance, one day a weird fish pops up, and it is considered an atypical kawaragoi. Ten years later, after hundreds of these fish are found and raised, it becomes a typical ,and show-worthy kawaragoi? Who defines what kawaragoi are worthy of showing?

then (april) at 8-9"

and now, at almost 14"

Better? Worse? Don't Care?!? Love to hear your comments. I think that the pattern near the tail has started to spread over the entire body....

It's not really blue any longer, but almost a graphite color.....

If it continues developing as it has, with the head and fins increasing their golden color, you'll have an attractive and unusual kawarigoi. Yea, it's a pond mutt; but every few million pond mutts there'll be one that's worth some pond space for the unique features they add to the mix. Maybe this one will fit the bill. BTW, it would have been nice if it had stayed blue, but that's not likely to happen with any koi. Even Shusui tend to become gray as they age. The fact that it had a blue tone similar to that of Shusui, and has shifted to gray tones, makes me think there is Asagi blood in the background... which may explain the 'kind of like, but not matsuba' patterning. Keep us posted. May it continue to improve.

thanks mike, appreciate the insight. Hoping it continues to improve as well. It almost seems like the dark scales have stretched apart, revealing a white underneath, which has helped to give the dark scales some seperation.

maybe not...but that's what it looks like to me when you look at the before and after pics. I did like the blue for sure, but the grey is pretty cool as well.

Thanks,
EThan

what does good growth suggest on a fish like this? At the beginning of this year it was around 9 inches. It's now around 14, and has passed a fish that was 12 inches at the beginning of this year. I thought mutts usually had bad genetics....but tend to be heartier.

Do not confuse size and growth rate with quality and refinement. Magoi grow large, remember.
