aquitori,

All of my Sanke are descended from the original Jimbei parents I purchased from Grant in the early 90's. The one exception was a male sanke, bred by Suda, I purchased in '97. It was the combination of these lines that formed the beginning of what we are seeing here now.

Can't wait to see how these develop. I'm in line behind Mike.

Hey....quit cutting in line....I drooled over these beautiful little fishies first....lol.

Seriously....these fish have so much potential to change the whole face of bekkos as we know them.

I look forward to it. BTW, don't you sleep.

You know Richard, I think it is the evolution of the hobbyist eye, not alot is known of Jimbei to hobbyist now a days, since Matsunosuke has pretty much taken over Jimbei's spot in Sanke. As Grant once put it, you have one bloodline that is strictly for size and one strictly for quality.

Ya know Richard... I can even see a "bekko revival" growout competition sometime down the road (a short road would be preferable) if your sanke and bekko keep moving in the direction you're taking them...

Two years ago Jinbei was wiped out with KHV as well. He has been buying back Koi from hobbiests in Japan to continue his bloodline. It was very sad to see this happening. Hopefully he will come back and more people will be able to learn about his Sanke.

I have a high regard for Grant's opinion, but I think the matsunosuke bloodline has considerable quality as well as size. There was a tradeoff when Toshio Sakai crossed out to magoi. I think it's time to cede the bandwidth to other threads until I can get some updated photos. I'll be doing the second cull Monday and bring them to the tanks for a third cull later in the week. Not looking forward to sitting in a pond all day on a nice frosty December morning, but it's going to be interesting. I don't expect much change since it's only been six weeks and the water has been cold, but there has been some development and I want to get the tategoi separated out.

I sent Russ the uncompressed photo of these fish. If anyone else is interested, please email me at fish_maker@yahoo.com and in the title type "Pond 38 sanke '07" and I'll send one out. It's too large a file to post here.

Richard, I hope you will post new pictures of these fish after the cull. I am really curious to see how they have progressed. It will be fun and educational to watch these fish grow and develop.

*~*Sorting With The Master*~*

Yesterday I returned from a most glorious visit to SJKoi, where I assisted Richard in the 3rd cull sorting of his phenomenal new tosai featured earlier in this thread. Yeah, more like played in the water with the fishies, oooing and ahhhing over this one and that one while he enjoyed some zen moments gazing into the small sea of brilliant colors, bringing up one writhing jewel after another for scrupulous examination before deciding which go on to the next level and which ones are culled, with frequent stops to point out to me the features and flaws of certain fish and why he'll keep or cull.

Here is the Master in his own element:

(note the soaked cuff, a sign of the devoted fishfarmer )

The Sanke were under scrutiny first--just take a look and tell me how you'd cull this...

Look also at the silken texture of jet black sumi in this group. Keep in mind that this is a Sanke x Sanke breeding:

(taken with natural light instead of flash)

Some of these beautiful babies sported suspiciously Showa-esque sumi patterning, promising to make a delightful display in the pond but perhaps a quandry for categorizing if shown.

The Bekkos were no disappointment either. In fact, they were jaw-dropping b-e-yooo-tiful beyond belief! Their skin and shiroji, even at this tender age, had a silken lustre that really enriched and emboldened the inky blackness of fathomless sumi pooled and streaked upon it. Bekko or Utsuri? I see a fine line in some of them...

Look at the irridescent edges of this baby's scales--simply amazing:

And my personal favorite:

The day went far too fast and the long drive home came much too quickly. I've lots and lots of pics yet to go through, but these give a pretty good representation of what I saw that day. Well, except for the kohakus, but that is for another thread...

Marie
