Dick, if perchance you ever get down this way, we'll have to go visit Richard together. There's so much to see and my pics just don't do justice where it's due....

There you are!

I was hoping for some discussions on sumi development to spawn from this, comparisons of different types of sumi from Sanke to Showa, the nature of koi development and so on as well. We're here to learn, aren't we?

Maybe it is my computer, or my eyes, but most of the pictures seem blurry and too dark. A lot of the closeups are not bright enough so the sumi is very hard to judge. It seems thick but looks flat. I just can't tell.

Hmmm...they look pretty clear and sharp on my machine. Let me see if I can find some closer brighter shots to peruse. That sumi is thick and glossy like goth lipstick in person. Skin is like silk. Maybe Richard has some from his camera, which does a much better job than mine....

Ya got lots and lots of wonderful fish. Sanke ain't my cup of tea but it doesn't matter at this size anyway...
You want a Bare-Knuckled critique...

Your fry seem very healthy, bright, and have enormous potential. I agree with Sangreaal's choice of the Bekko's. Other than that they are Pipsqueaks...given the opportunity I would be willing to purchase a bunch and grow them on as they do hold immense potential....

There that is all anyone can say...they have potential and look like they were raised well.

I am impressed with what was outside the water...you've got some really nice systems for dealing with fish..I'd like to see more of that stuff...
and older fish...INDIVIDUAL older fish..or at least narrow it down to 3-6 of em and ask us to rate em ...

That's a possibility, Russ. That, and I'm seeing that photobucket does some downsizing when I upload, which might have something to do with it. Still looking for some decent close ups. My camera can only do so much without tweaking things with Corel, which would defeat the purpose of seeing what I saw when I was seeing it. *LOL* I hope Richard has some good raw shots in 10 megapixels. I'm coming up empty on this end....

Someday Marie, I do Hope to get down there

I think what impresses me overall, from the sanke to bekko to kohaku is there are lots of different patterns. Often times at this stage i would see many
Omoyo and heavy two step patterns. But not the case with this latest crop of SJ koi.

Some of the skin and sumi on the bekkos made it obvious that there were some very nice koi there. I'm sure some of the gosanke had it also but the pics were not quite as clear so as to tell so clearly. The little 3 step kohaku sure was nice.

I, like Richard,....appreciate your enthusiasm for the hobby,Marie....Don't ever change!

I quess if I was picking koi at this stage

I'd select the sanke in the last sanke photo that's in the middle of the photo pointing at 12 oclock. Really like the bekko in the net. and were several kohakus including tancho's that were nice!

Russ,

I have been trying to get my head around this sumi too. It's thick, thick, thick, but so thick that there is no dimension to it. Take the fish out of the water and you can see how it's lacquer and silky, but in the water it's simply the absence of light. These being young fish means a lot can change, but the few examples of this sumi that cropped up last year are stellar at two years and improving. I'll try to get some uncompressed, but downsized images up later tonight. By the way, tank temps hit 43F this morning so I pulled the plug on all the tategoi and returned them to their warmer ponds.
