I like side-by-side for easy comparisons too.

Whats the size on her before and after?

RR . . .

Very interesting fish to study over time. Thanks for putting it up.

Am I the only one to see more and more atmosphere of showa when viewing the sumi? Or just the only one to mention it?

I think JR and Don are on to something with the somewhat Showa characteristic to the sumi formation. What I find especially interesting is the way the sumi is expanding into areas where there was previously no indication of its underlying presence. The new sumi trailing down the side from the dorsal line is not indicated in the previous picture at all to my eye.

you call it expanding, toshio calls in elastic

At his seminar this spring ( thanks again Russ) Toshio attributed much of the finished outcome to the elasticity of his new sumi and beni. he said it affected the initial look of the kiwa and sashi as somewhat blurred but not to worry because it would tighten up with age.

One of the things I'm anxious for personally is the October 13th review session of Dan,Sharon and my sanke and showa grow fish from Toshio. This will be the end of the second year of a third year study. One of the koi that has been unique
is a showa, who's sumi has been up and down numerous times like some of Toshio's matsunosuke sanke's sumi. This up and down characteristic from all my study during the decades prior seems to indicate a better higher type sumi. So I'll be anxious to see first hand where this fish is. We have one more year to go on this study which will end with the master's actual presence
and personal review of the koi that were hand selected for us by him. But more on that later.....

This sumi does have the dramatic appeal of showa. She didn't grow much. She is only at 35cm, but I believe she was injured in the pond not long after being placed into it. Here is the original closeup comapred to now.

There is also another fish I have posted on this site before, but I want to re-post it in the context of looking at it's sumi. This is a male from last year. Same father different mother. I also have squirreled this fish away as possible brood stock.

Taisho Sanshoku with Showa Sanshoku flavor. ...What I find most interesting is the squirreling away. It is good to see domestic U.S. breeders trying to create their own genetic pools. But, that has to be a higher mountain to climb compared to getting the best that can be obtained from Japan. In the end the hobbyist will benefit more than the breeder, I think. But, much of the return is intangible.

Mike,

It would be a tough mountain to climb indeed. I have begun to incorporate the matsunosuke bloodline into this year's crop and bow low to what the masters in Japan have accomplished. I will both line breed and incorporate my own stock into this new bloodline to see where it leads me. I hope to be able to add to what has already been established with my unique gene pool and not entirely reinvent the wheel.
