I agreed with Russell. C (female) has better quality & potential than A (male). however C will not be an ideal proportion fish because of the weak abdomen.

I liked C the best when I started reading this thread and haven't seen anything to change my mind.

It's still C for me.

C is my favorite, though it is the smallest of the lot. Good motoguro and the sumi looks to be developing slowly, so it may not be a "flash-in-the-pan" like A looks like it would be.

Of course, I could be wrong. But I follow my eye whether I understand why or not...

just to throw a spanner in the works I thought you might like to see the developement photo's of Musashi from Omosako, the pics are from when she is yonsai. They kept her just because of her body shape, and her sumi quality in the small amount that was showing. Sorry about the pic its not the clearest, enjoy

Notice how at 78cm there is no motoguru on the left pec, but there is sumi on the cheek on the left side. At 82cm the motoguru is even and tight on both sides. Don't let the lack of motoguru or too much motoguru fool you. If there is no motoguru at a young age but there is sumi on the gill plate on that side, it will develop.

Thank you for the pictures.

Wayne,
If you can, get your hands on the old Koi Bito issues #3 and #4. Great interview with Omosako and focuses on development of their bloodlines. One point that always piqued my interest was the statement of Omosako regarding the motoguro in young fish.
I'll sum up his statement. "I don't care if it is there or not". That is my words buts gets to the point of his interview regarding that aspect.

Personally I would choose C.

Russell,
That is a great point regarding motoguro development that I have not heard before. I sure hope it is pertinent to my 2.5 yo.

OT: I sure do miss waiting for months to get my newest installment of KB. Sometimes you never know how good things really are.

Russell: Why do you think "C" is female and "A" is male? I think so also, but cannot explain why I feel that way.

I agree 100% with Russell. The pecs, even on tosai, can tell you the sex of a fish 95% of the time. You just have to understand what to look for. And no, it's not the tiny little white sex tubercles. In fact, IMHO, both A and B are males. C is the female and would definitely be my choice as well.
