Can you expand on your comments re: sexing via the pecs for me? Size? shape?

Thanks.

Roger

It'll take some very serious practice on an individual's part to play this game. Look VERY CLOSELY at the leading ray of the pectoral fins. What you will notice is that the front ray is particularly larger or thicker, as the case may be, than the rest of the fin. If you're still not sure, even the breeders will do this next step to be sure, feel the fin. You will feel the thickness if it's there.

To practice, look at some larger KNOWN females and males. Look for these indicators so you can train yourself better on what you're looking for in the smaller fish.

DISCLAIMER: This is not ALWAYS the case, but is about 90-95% accurate! Good luck. Let us know if this worked for you!

In genaral, Male pecs are wider, thicker, bigger, whiter(instead of clear) than female and main bones are thick & strong too.
Additionally, almost always male develops(sumi, shiroji) and grows(size) faster than female at tosai.

I would have gone with A. Just because I like the 'modern' look with less sumi. I recently bought this jumbo tosai shiro from Omosako.....very very expensive for a tosai...was it worth it? I hope so! Will tell you in 1 year! Male or female based on the pecs???

Hey Russ
Thanks!!!
Since you were just in Japan and I saw you looking at a lot of jumbo tosai you might be able to give me an indication on wheter I pay a relevant price for this one..she came in at $800. She is 32cm and currently in quarentine at the dealer. I hope to get her in May.

Erns, if this tosai is a Musashi offspring then you may have hit the jackpot.

Just because this is the offspring of a particular fish does not automatically validate it's quality.

Erns

I agree with Russ, from the picture (which is not a good angle) I would wager a GUESS that it is female.

All things being equal, females are preferable to males. Are all things equal here? For those that selected C, if A was a female, would you still pick C?

Presumably, females are selected because they can attain better size and conformation. If true, is C likely to achieve substantial size given its slow start? If not, is C still preferable?

Setting aside the examples given in this thread, as a general proposition, is a mediocre female preferable to a very good male?
