Imaginary Shopping

I've been in some rather boring business meetings today. During a powerpoint presentation I sat in the rear and surfed the offerings on the web. These tosai Kohaku impressed me. One just keeps drawing me back, so I think I'll get her if I can leave her in the mud for the summer. (No more in my pond until I decide it's time for one to move on.) Any guesses which?

The white ground on #3 is execptional compared to the others. The contrast it creates with the hi makes it the look bright and even. The pattern will make the fish (when BIG) a show stopper. I think with the new English style of showing you need to look for patterns that will make the judges stop and go back to your vat. The other 3 don't have this going for them. For tosai the body is looking good so everthing is going for this little one. How big are these toasai?

I have a question regarding age. When is a koi no longer a tosai and when does it stop being a nissai? Is a 36 month old koi still a nissai? The more I'm buying high grade koi the more the age and growth achieved becomes a factor...and it's confusing me a little!

Erns

The Japanese use the terms tosai, nisai, sansai etc to fish depending on how many growing seasons they have been through. If I'm not mistaken when tosai from say last year's spawn are getting ready to be put back into the mud ponds they are called aka nisai and when they're harvested they are called nisai. This happens each year with progression to aka sansai-sansai, aka yonsai-yonsai and so on.

A lot of fish are really younger than this age factor given to them by the breeder. A lot of nisai are actually as young as 14-15 months yet have gone through 2 growing seasons.

The reason for this stupid question....we live in the Southern hemisphere, so when we buy koi in October and we bring them to South Africa they are getting another 6 months of summer on top the whole summer they just had. How does this influence the age/size factor then??
