As the beni is a bit weak, it couldn't stretch with the shoulder growth. That's why you see those beni scales separated from the rest of the hi plate. Fish has a decent body and nice shiroji and sumi. Also looks to be GinRin from the photo!?

Mike
Selling it partially because of the breaking up beni, but partially because he is getting other fish that take precident. Last fall he decided to get rid of it when the beni was breaking up, but this spring he noticed that the hi was really deepening, and that the sumi really came in thick. I love the white and black on it....and the ginrin is wonderful. I have another ginrin in my pond that will really make it (the pond overall) look great.

Thanks Mike,
Ethan

Ethan

What's important here is that you see inherent traits that you can enjoy from this fish. That's what counts. Who really knows what this fish will look like in a year or two. Maybe those individual beni scales will disappear. I agree, the shiroji and sumi are very nice. As MikeM pointed out, you may end up with a tancho showa or a shiro utsuri. Keep us updated as watching how colors and patterns change allows us all to see and learn.

The way the Beni seems to be solidifying now vs last fall, it may just wind up being an interesting example of Kanoko Showa. The biggest trick for you will be to maintain water that will hold the beni well enough to know what its greatest potential really is.

Thank you both for your comments. It would be interesting if it ended up a tancho showa or an utsuri. Should I attempt to slow down the growth of this fish, or just let nature take its course?

Papabear: What is a Kanoko showa? I have never heard of that before.

I was calling for some input from Papa Bear also Ethan, in another thread. He must be playing outside.

Kanoko is fawn or speckled like a fawn, and was describing the single scales of red color showing as dots on your fish, like a dappled fawn. Poetic but usually a sign of deterioration and instability, at best a transient look, but, when rarely found in a mature quality fish...spectacular. Think of it as a kinda nifty look as it is passing through.

Why am I answering this? I know nuttin man.

You have understood that this is a fish that you can learn much from, that can be a dear fish, but cannot be a fine example, right?

Thanks Mitten. Appreciate the response. That is interesting about the dappled fawn look. I would love to see a mature fish with this type of pattern for interest's sake.

Yes, I understand taht this fish is a fish that I can learn from, but is not a solid example of a show fish. I do plan to continue asking questions that arise as the fish's pattern changes and the fish enlarges. You never know unless you ask. I have learned a lot from all of you, as well as others on other sites. I appreciate the patience you all show to this beginner.

Well, Ethan, one of my first posts to you was to say that having a grown man asking questions who can spell and understand a written response was a treat.
