Kindai Showa . . .

Purchased 5 koi, including this showa, last Feb from Eastern Nishikigoi; was QT'd at the dealers until the SoCal Show in March; was then QT'd and heat cycled here. Will be moved into the pond this week.

Finally got around to taking photos and measurements. Please feel free to critique.

Breeder = Sekiguchi; length = 11" today.

In one of the threads a couple of weeks ago:

Omosako Shiro Utsuri - Pick one

Super Kindai (Junichi Kayano) posted some pics of a stunning Takeda Showa from Nisai to Gosai, and I was struck by its resemblance to ours -- so here's a side-by-side, too. Ours is on the right.

Only hope ours develops as well as that one has.

Wow, Don. If the sumi emerges where it looks like it's going to, that koi could be a real stand out. The body looks good, too. Any thoughts on sex?

PS Nice shiro on the tailstop.

Well, Don, I think you are going to be proving the idea of unbalanced Hi pattern and unbalanced sumi pattern coming together to create a balance that makes Showa.

.... I like the "stumpy" shoulder. You're gonna enjoy that one.

The similarity is fun to see.

All you have to do is provide premium care for the long term, watching the three colors progress and coalesce, anticipating an artistry none can foresee, hoping that in the end none will think to say "shouldn't there be one more red dot?"

Showa is for dreamers. Have a blast.

Don, this one should be a lot of fun to watch. Congrats and good luck.

Mickey, "Showa is for dreamers." I like that line.

Kindai ARE tricky. I also would worry how the fish looks at size 5 as the beni is lacking in the rear. The skin on this fish however is exceptional! IF the fish finishes well and the beni all holds in, a fish with great skin like this can carry pattern flaws easily. The white will be the element that carries this fish and what will support the bright soft look of the beni, even as limited as it is.
So if, in addition, you wind up with bold sumi and a great body, your in business! In other words, quality of skin can overcome pattern weaknesses. JR

PS. I should have finished this post by saying- this fish IS a tategoi. We just don't know how far it will come?

Carl . . .

Thanks. I'm guessing (hoping?) female.

Funny thing about that tail stop. The adage goes "Showa starts and finishes with sumi" but I think it works on this kindai because of the shiro quality. Just my opinion.

MikeM . . .

Kind of thought a showa lover like you would enjoy this one, even though it's not traditional.

And you're right on about hoping the two patterns will work together to create a whole larger than the sum of its parts.

How many 'Shouldn't there be's' does it take to crush a dream?
