Kanoko Asagi?

Whatever it is, a great collector's fish.

That is so cool!!! My pond needs one of those How stable is the hi in this case? I know kanoko is not always stable on a kohaku.

I don't think anyone can say for sure what will happen to this kinda pattern and beni. Sometimes it will actually get more predominate as the fish ages-

Curious that the shoulder and pre-dorsal spine area remain relatively clear in all 3 examples. I am trying to think of other patternings where that area remains clear. Only Hajiro types and Shusui are coming to mind. I think I recall a leather carp photo from the '70s where the body was a rust brown and the head & pre-dorsal area were blue-gray. All that come to mind are "old genes" types of koi, which kinda fits with Kanoko patterning being old-style genes too. .... Sorry for rambling at the keyboard.

So, three fish are posted.

First, an asagi and a beaut. But I think I remember you, JR, saying it would never win anything as an asagi if there were any conventionally patterned direct competition and it didn't get benched as kawari.

Second an ochiba I believe. Already kawairgoi so a possibly strong contender in variety.

Third, asagi? Head pattern is reverse of the expected red and white placements. Kanoko pattern is an entirely different color. It looks like the ochiba's color. Has light/ pale/ uncolored leading rays. Is this an indicator of motoaka? What's with this fish?

Cool. Actually very different though--

Yours is a dorsal pattern on the normally pastel blue dorsal area. Mine looks like it is emerging from the lateral red of an asgai and rising up onto the body?
If you think about it, many normal asagi either get darker blue/gray ( ticking) as they age OR they have the red rise and invade the blue area and turn the fish towards some degree of a matsuba-like with age. I thing we are seeing the same progression only with kanoko? I also suspect a dilute gene exists in asagi, from the narumi line that creates a brighter pastel color palette compared to the konjo type coloring range. Koi genetics is pretty fascinating stuff! JR

Wow. That is a really sharp fish.....are these just random fish that result from spawnings, or do people breed these specifically to sell? I would think they would sell well if someone could perfect it!

Bill Blackburn has one almost like it. I gave him the koi from one I bred from Hosokai bloodline. It was my best fish of the bunch, perfect in every way. 2 weeks later in his water ( feeding sinking hikari wheatgerm ) the asagi han started switching over to beni.
