My Bad....Well, people have to understand beni at different stages of development when they purchase koi...From what I have seen and experienced Hikkui general starts off at Nisai and it isnt just GoSanke. I have a Goshiki that has Hikkui on the forehead, but with scrapping and PP rub it seems to lessen the look. I think if a hobbyist starts off with good water and genetics this will lessen the chance of Hikkui...Even with that being said Hikkui will still have no known cure.

hikui is real tough to treat. I have tried many drugs, and none worked. I ended up giving 2 of my hukui infect sakai sanke to my ex gardener. he had a 3000g pond with 108 kois, no regular water change. He only change water, the whole pond, 3-4 times a year. he flushed his bead filter once or twice a month. Next to the pond were a couple of funky trees that kept dropping leaves into the pond. less than 3 months later, the hikui was gone from both koi.

He broke all koi keeping rules : water change, what water change ? He feed like crazy, like 40Kg a month, with cheap food, I think it was haifeng or something.

Maybe good food is the problem ? maybe green pond is the answer, maybe the tree did magic. Who know ? Now he has 2 extremely nice Sakai sanke.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that melanine has been mixed in fish food pellets including koi foods.

These articles just came out yesterday and today. 38 poultry farms in Indiana were given contaminated feed in early February containing melamine, with some of the chickens likely to have entered the food supply. read more...

china has now banned melamine but its hog farmers have been feeding pigs with melamine for years. although, it's now ban but that doesn't mean its farmer will stop using melamine. read more..

I had a husky come down with kidney problems after eating some of that recalled dog food. BUT it was months before the high profile media coverage. I often wonder if koi wipe outs that are immediately focued on KHV might not be linked to tainted food? JR

Saratogatan: I have seen reports of hikkui disappearing when a koi is placed in green water, whether a mud pond or a concrete one. Why??? I don't know, but I've got the idea that it may be because algified water can have excellent nitrogen parameters due to the algae consuming it. There are reports of high nitrate worsening hikkui, which JR mentions above. Maybe a connection? Don't know. Algae are known to have a mild anti-bacterial effect... maybe green water has an anti-viral effect? I've never seen a study of such.
