Playing with a new measuring tub/bad beni

I took a break today from cutting up fallen trees to play with my new measuring tub. Pretty sure all you west coast guys will recognize it (thanks Chris for selling me the last one!). Anyway with all the discussion about different shades of beni I figured I'd pull up 3 kohakus for comparison. Two of them are crap and it shows pretty clearly in the photos. I'm not going to explain why they are crap as many on the board can explain it much better than I. The other is male and is a darker more cherry red. This type of darker red is better for males that are going to be shown in the smaller sizes. Unfortunately this male is just over 18" so his show days are just about over. With my water he'll probably be ok for this season but by the next he will probably be going downhill and will not be able to compete with the females. I also added a close-up of a shimi in case you have never seen one.

Jim . . .

Playing with fish beats chopping wood -- any day!

Interesting thread and thanks for sharing.

I recognize your male as the one that won Best in Size 3 at the 2005 Koi Kichi Show. Beautiful koi. He's gained some volume, but I'm sorry to hear he's only reached 18" in length.

As for shimmies -- been there, done that and got my own photos to prove it.

He got a 1st place size 4 kohaku at the Allentown show as well. I'm actually not too sorry about the size. Size 4 for a good place for him to be. I think the females in 5 and up would be too much for him.
