larvae would not be the correct term to use...i would say post-ovum stage. . personally i think since most chordate embryos are similiar, they would naturally be of similar "color". not until after the embryo has continued differentiation would it change "color". i know little about anything from there on out

oh yeah i love them utsuris!!!

Brady . . .

Interesting that the flat black appears from your modern Showa parent sets. Do you consider that type of sumi to be a throwback?

HI KOICOP,

YES, THE OLD STYLE SUMI IS DEFINITELY A THROWBACK TO EARLIER GENERATIONS. THE 2ND AND 3RD CULLINGS ON SHOWA ARE A WILD SWIRLING MESS OF KOI HISTORY.

Also, do you see a positive correlation between sanke sumi and gosanke skin? Or do you view the two traits as being independent of each other -- in other words, some with one, some with the other, and some with both? SOME WITH ONE, SOME WITH THE OTHER,... AND HOPEFULLY SOME WITH BOTH. EVEN WITHOUT THE OUTCROSSING WITH SANKE, SHOWA ARE GETTING BETTER EVERY GENERATION AS CHARACTERISTICS ARE DOUBLED UPON. THE HI PLATES ARE IMPROVING, THE BODY SHAPES ARE IMPROVING, AND THE SUMI IS.

BEST WISHES,
BRADY

Dear Bimbo ( and I type that with all due respect!)
Nope, larvae is the right term. This is the period of time from hatching until the swin bladder and gills are formed. Billard in Europe and Rothbard in Isreal use the term and the descriptive period extensively in both their books and his papers on koi genetics.
As the fish develops to a second stage fry, the black color becomes clear.

Sorry Mike, I missed your last response until now--

Well you tell me, as far as your questions go, what would you call this one? Aka sanke or aka bekko? JR

Shiros have been my favorite Koi and I believe always will. I plan to have four of them in my pond each unique from each other. One or two would not do. But I could live with just a couple of Kohaku. So it doesn't start and end for everyone with Kohaku. Shiros are my inspiration.

JR

Well, based on past definitions, I would call it an Aka Sanke due to the white finnage. Thanks for adding this to the discussion 'cuz I'm sure you're gonna tell me that it won a major award at a major show as Aka Bekko!! LOL!! This is, however, the very type of definition I'm speaking of that could be updated. I don't want to lose the grassroots varieties that are responsible for today's genetically superior fish. I just think a few of the definitions of certain varieties such as these two could be "updated" to maybe help eliminate possible confusion amongst hobbyists, judges and the like. Don't you agree?
