We have not come far from the days when we believed that a really great little fish that wins baby champion can grow up to win young, mature and eventually Grand Champion. So tategoi as a concept, is a lot to ask of the beginner to grasp as a word that varies within the context that you are using it. Some dealers know this and take full advantage of that learning curve. And some young backyard dealers are innocent and are being taken for a ride by Japanese distributors, regarding tategoi. They are in awe and so they believe everything their 'sensei' tells them. Until they learn the business.
Your jumbos are nice. No question. But I have seen a lot of jumbos with no pattern at all , just size and bright coloring ( good bones and good skin). But that is all. They tend to break towards 'males' a large percentage of the time and they have no future in a koi show as they have not pattern.Once the 'glow of Japan' leaves the skin in terms of gloss and color intensity, and the rest of the stock here catches up with it in size, the fish are often not even fish that place in the show.
Buyer beware. JR
I agree, you should know what you are buying.

One of My Favorites!

I really like this two step, so I took a few really close up shots.

A One Step

This, to me , is one of the most interesting one step Kohaku I have seen. On a big Koi, this pattern will become very interesting.

A Few Close Ups!

It is hard to really appreciate the beauty of these Kohaku with pictures. Nothing beats seeing them in person, but a few close ups can't hurt.

But that is kinda the point Russ? Newbies don't know what they are buying. And they rely on club members and dealers to teach them. And the dealers often take advantage of that fact. I've seen dealers put a ginrin gosanke in a bowl of shallow water just enough to cover the back. Then roll the bowl so the fish's back flashes out of the water and he mutters--- " Beeautifulllll ' the whole time. It works every time as the beginner gets excited about the color and gloss. Good salemanship. But very bad teaching and very bad for the growth of the hobby in terms of sound knowledge base. I guess I just find something particularly distasteful about selling under the guise of advising or teaching. Fine if its a newbie dealer and he/she is learning themselves and passes along bad info unintentionally. But the aggressive businessman that is drawn into the club scene with a desire to control amateur activity and the minds and hearts of newbies- bad, bad , bad.

If and when I'm made king of the world, before ordering world peace, and before 'saving the children' ( lord I hate that platitude! It should only be used by Miss Americas and NOT politicians) I'm going to drive all dealers into a purely professional role. LOls

Hey Russ, what do you call 10 koi dealers in sheep's clothing, on the bottom of a 3 meter koi pond? - A good start! LOLs ( only kidding, only kidding----- a little--) JR

How to keep them at the bottom? remove as much of the hot air as possible and then tie rocks to the sheep costume tail to counter balance the trapped bull scat . JR
